School Staff Perspectives on Tobacco Prevention
The California Department of Education (CDE) has operated the statewide, school-based, Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program since 1989. Evaluating the impact of such a program is challenging in a real-world context, where multiple tobacco prevention activities have been ongoing for years and occur simultaneously. This study aimed to determine how TUPE funding was distributed geographically and whether it was associated with increased t…
Evali, anti-vaping advertising, quit attempts, and susceptibility
Adolescent vaping prevalence in the U.S. surged dramatically from 2017 to 2019, then declined significantly, making 2019 an inflection point. Anti-vaping advertising and media reporting on e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) may have contributed to the decline. This study examined whether anti-vaping advertising exposure and EVALI awareness were associated with adolescents’ quit attempts, intentions to quit, and susceptibilit…
Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting motoric cognitive risk syndrome among community-dwelling older adults in China
Background: Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome is characterized by slow gait speed and subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) and increases the risk of dementia and mortality. Objective: This study aimed to examine the clinical risk factors and prevalence of MCR in community-dwelling older adults, with the goal of developing and validating a nomogram model for developing prevention strategies against MCR. Methods: = 395). By using univariate an…
Gender differences in family meal frequency and their association with substance use and mental health among middle and high school students
Background: Family meals are associated with adolescent health outcomes. Studies have reported that girls are less likely than boys to have dinner with their families. Purpose: This study examined gender differences in family meal frequency and the relationship between meal frequency and other health measures, using a large and representative sample of California middle and high school students. Methods: This study analyzed data from the 2019-202…
Examining Cannabis, Tobacco, and Vaping Discourse on Reddit
Background: Perceptions of tobacco, cannabis, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are continually evolving in the United States. Exploring these characteristics through user generated text sources may provide novel insights into product use behavior that are challenging to identify using survey-based methods. The objective of this study was to compare the topics frequently discussed among Reddit members in cannabis, tobacco, and ENDS-…
Early adoption of heated tobacco products resembles that of e-cigarettes
Only a small fraction of US population in 2020 have tried any HTP. However, the similarity in early adoption rates following awareness, suggests that future adoption for HTP may be similar to that for e-cigarettes, if HTP are marketed more aggressively
Google shopping queries for vaping products, Juul and Iqos during the E-cigarette, or Vaping, product use Associated Lung Injury (Evali) outbreak
These results suggest that unplanned events, such as the EVALI outbreak, can provoke changes in the epidemiology of product usage. Tobacco companies should be prohibited from using events such as disease outbreaks to position their products as less harmful without prior approval
Did Philip Morris International use the e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (Evali) outbreak to market Iqos heated tobacco
25 July 2021 will mark the second anniversary1 of the e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak.2 The concerns raised and news media attention focused on EVALI created a fertile environment for the tobacco industry to promote their e-cigarette alternatives,1 3 but this has not been studied. One such product is Philip Morris International’s (PMI) heated tobacco product: ‘IQOS’.4 5 To assess how PMI promoted IQOS i…
News coverage of the E-cigarette, or Vaping, product use Associated Lung Injury (Evali) outbreak and internet searches for vaping cessation
The vaping-induced pulmonary disease outbreak spawned increased coverage about the dangers of vaping and internet searches for vaping cessation. Resources and strategies that respond to this elevated interest should become a priority among public health leaders
Offers of Cigarettes and E-Cigarettes Among High School Students
Receiving offers of cigarettes or e-cigarettes can contribute to the progression from intention to actual use. However, there is a lack of data about the prevalence or characteristics of youth being offered cigarettes or e-cigarettes. A random sample of 91 high schools in the state of California (with 40,137 students) participated in the 2015−16 California Student Tobacco Survey. Offers of cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the last 30 days were asse…
A Comparison of E-Cigarette Use Patterns and Smoking Cessation Behavior among Vapers by Primary Place of Purchase
E-cigarette customers differed in significant ways by channels of purchase, most notably in their smoking cessation behaviors. Previous population studies have relied mostly on retail channel data, which accounted for less than 30% of all products sold by 2016. Future studies of e-cigarette use should consider a broader set of channels
Telephone care co-ordination for tobacco cessation
NCT00123682
Long-term e-cigarette use and smoking cessation
Short-term e-cigarette use was not associated with a lower rate of smoking cessation. Long-term use of e-cigarettes was associated with a higher rate of quitting smoking
Use of electronic cigarettes in smoke-free environments
E-cigarette use in smoke-free environments was common, suggesting that most e-cigarette users do not consider smoke-free laws to apply to e-cigarettes. Explicit laws should be considered if jurisdictions want to prohibit e-cigarette use in public places
Quitting smoking before and after varenicline
Addition of varenicline to the list of approved cessation aids has mainly led to displacement of other therapies. As a result, there was no meaningful change in population cessation rate despite a remarkable increase in varenicline use. The population impact of a new therapy is a function of more than efficacy or reach of the therapy
Comparison of Smoking Cessation Between Education Groups
Objectives. We examined smoking cessation rate by education and determined how much of the difference can be attributed to the rate of quit attempts and how much to the success of these attempts. Methods. We analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS, 1991–2010) and the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS, 1992–2011). Smokers (≥ 25 years) were divided into lower- and higher-education groups (≤ 12 ye…
A Multistate Asian-Language Tobacco Quitline
Objectives. We conducted a dissemination and implementation study to translate an intervention protocol for Asian-language smokers from an efficacy trial into an effective and sustainable multistate service. Methods. Three state tobacco programs (in California, Colorado, and Hawaii) promoted a multistate cessation quitline to 3 Asian-language-speaking communities: Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. The California quitline provided counseling centra…
Use of e-cigarettes by individuals with mental health conditions
Smokers with MHC are differentially affected by the rise in popularity of e-cigarettes. Clinical interventions and policies for tobacco control on e-cigarettes should take into account the possible outcomes and their implications for this priority population
Four hundred and sixty brands of e-cigarettes and counting
The number of e-cigarette brands is large and has been increasing. Older brands tend to highlight their advantages over conventional cigarettes while newer brands emphasise consumer choice in multiple flavours and product versatility. These results can serve as a benchmark for future research on the impact of upcoming regulations on product design and advertising messages of e-cigarettes
Do smokers support smoke-free laws to help themselves quit smoking? Findings from a longitudinal study
Support for smoke-free laws among smokers correlates with past quit attempts and predicts future quitting. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that some smokers support smoke-free laws because the laws could help them quit smoking
Interventions to increase smoking cessation at the population level
This paper reviews the literature on smoking cessation interventions, with a focus on the last 20 years (1991 to 2010). These two decades witnessed major development in a wide range of cessation interventions, from pharmacotherapy to tobacco price increases. It was expected that these interventions would work conjointly to increase the cessation rate on the population level. This paper examines population data from the USA, from 1991 to 2010, usi…
Use of a Smokers' Quitline by Asian Language Speakers
Objectives. We examined state quitline utilization by smokers who called Chinese-, Vietnamese-, or Korean-language lines, and compared their usage rates to those of Asians and Whites calling the English-language line. Methods. Using data from 15 years (1993–2008) of operation of the California quitline (which included data on 22 061 callers to Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese lines) and from multiple California Health Interview Surveys, we compute…
Smoking cessation quitlines
Quitlines providing telephone counseling for smoking cessation derive from behavioral research and theory, have been shown to be effective, and have been adopted and then institutionalized at both the state and national levels. Although psychologists have made seminal contributions to quitline development and evaluation, this accomplishment has gone largely unnoticed by the practice and research communities in clinical, counseling, and health psy…
The California Tobacco Control Program’s effect on adult smokers
Successful smoking cessation increased by 25% during the 1990s in the US. Comprehensive tobacco-control programmes were associated with greater cessation success than were with high cigarette prices alone, although both effects were limited to younger adults
Tobacco cessation quitlines in North America
Quitlines in North America display core commonalities: they have adopted the principles of multisession proactive counselling and they conduct regular outcome evaluation. Yet variations, tested and untested, exist. Standardised reporting procedures would be of benefit to the field. Shared discussion of the rationale behind variations can inform future decision making for all North American quitlines

Reaching Young Adult Smokers Through Quitlines
This study compared state quitline data (1992–2006) with population survey data to assess use by young adults aged 18 to 24 years. Young adult daily smokers used the service in proportion to their numbers in the state. Young adults responded to mass media quitline promotion, even promotion that did not target them. Women, ethnic minorities, and persons with low income and lower education levels were well represented among young adult quitline cal…
The demographics of help-seeking for smoking cessation in California and the role of the California Smokers’ Helpline
Objective To investigate and compare the demographics of California smokers seeking assistance to quit and those of smokers who called the California Smokers’ Helpline, a large scale state-wide smoking cessation service. Data sources The 1990, 1992, and 1993 California Tobacco Surveys, and screening interviews conducted with callers to the California Smokers’ Helpline in its first 30 months of operation. Design For the California Tobacco Surveys,…
Perception of foreign cigarettes and their advertising in China
The previous restrictions on cigarette advertising in China failed to prevent a large portion of the population from seeing and understanding the advertisements. Before the 1995 advertising ban took effect, strict limitations on imports of foreign cigarettes notwithstanding, certain highly advertised brands such as Marlboro achieved wide recognition and even consumer preference. Stricter restrictions are suggested as previous ones have failed to …
A centralised telephone service for tobacco cessation
A centralised helpline operation can be an accessible and effective service for tobacco users and should be included in any large scale, comprehensive tobacco control program
