Self-Reinforcement by Under-Achieving, Under-Controlled Girls
Two black sixth-grade girls served as subjects in studies, each of which utilized a single person and combined a reversal and a multiple-baseline design. The problems leading to referral included frequent breaking of school rules, academic underachievement, and use of physical force and the threat of violence to get other children to comply with the subjects' requests. An “employer” paid the girls to work for him, to record their own behavior, an…
A Formula for Computing Inter-Observer Agreement
A method is presented for calculating amount of inter-observer agreement which takes into account agreements on both occurrences and nonoccurrences of the target behavior while making an adjustment for the frequencies of each
Peak versus Mean Amount of Reinforcement in Operant Conditioning with Children
Four variable-amount reinforcement schedules were used with 120 6-, 7-, and 8-yr.-old children. These schedules constituted one of the factors in a three-factor analysis of covariance design, with S's age and sex being the second and third factors, respectively. Each S was run for a single session consisting of 3 components: (a) 3 min. of baseline, (b) 36 reinforcements under one of the four schedules, and (c) 10 min. of extinction. Frequency of …
Positioning Dominance in Ground Squirrels: A Measure of Social Hierarchies
Social dominance was measured in 30 Whitetail antelope squirrels ( Citellus leucurus) by placing two animals at a time in a small enclosure and observing which was most often on top of the other. Hierarchies established in such fashion were quite stable across a few days but less reliable across a 3-mo. period
