Laying the Foundations for Co‐Design: A Micro‐Community Engagement Approach to Patient and Public Involvement in Rural Health Research
Food without agriculture
Efforts to make food systems more sustainable have emphasized reducing adverse environmental impacts of agriculture. In contrast, chemical and biological processes that could produce food without agriculture have received comparatively little attention or resources. Although there is a possibility that someday a wide array of attractive foods could be produced chemosynthetically, here we show that dietary fats could be synthesized with 1.5 g CO 2…
The Organic Crisis of a Colonised State: Bulgaria in the Eye of the Pandemic, 2020–2022
Bulgaria’s particularly tragic experience with covid -19, with one of the largest death tolls per 100,000 in Europe, can be analysed in terms of purely natural factors (more lethal variants), the foibles and missteps of leaders, and unpredictable vaccine supplies. From a Gramscian critical materialist perspective, the pattern is better understood in terms of four interlocking structures: Bulgaria’s subaltern status as a downtrodden colony of Euro…

The Liberal Order Framework: A Prospectus for a Reconnaissance of Canadian History
Organic Crisis, Integral State, Passive Revolution: Twilight of the Neoliberal Order
A reconnaissance of the 2020 pandemic begins by registering the moments of refusal and supersedure, demonstrating the extent to which it seemed to many to be an organic (transformational) crisis re-ordering neoliberal capitalism’s fundamental elements. Vaccine development and debates over lockdowns illustrate the emergence of a neoliberal integral state, one in which the lines between government, industry and finance are blurred to the point of i…
The Impact of Custodial Grandparenting on Cognitive Performance in a Longitudinal Sample of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
There are currently 2.7 million grandparents raising grandchildren in the United States. As grandparent caregiving has become more prevalent, concerns have surfaced regarding the effect of additional caregiving responsibilities placed on an aging population. The following study uses an existing dataset of individuals who graduated from Wisconsin high schools in 1957. The present study examined the impact of grandparenting on measures of cognition…

Is Raising Your Grandchild Bad for Your Health? The Association Between Custodial Grandparent Status and Health Biomarkers in Taiwanese Grandparents
Data from two waves of the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study in Taiwan were analyzed to determine the effects of custodial grandparenting on health in a longitudinal sample. Self-reported measures on respondents' perception of their health, six health biomarkers, the presence of twelve diseases, and a measure of stress were included. Custodial Grandparents (CGPs) were significantly more likely to report worse health than their peer…

Liberty, Equality and Tourism: D. C. Harvey, Prince Edward Island, and the Power of Tourism/History, 1931–1956
Daniel Cobb Harvey (1886–1965) was one of the most renowned of the twentieth-century historians of Canada’s Maritime Provinces. Although he served from 1931 to 1956 as the provincial archivist of Nova Scotia, he was throughout his entire adult life passionately committed to the history of his native Prince Edward Island. An ardent proponent of bringing the British liberal enlightenment to all Canadians, Harvey worked assiduously from the 1920s to…
Escaping the Throne Room
In The Gramscian Moment Peter Thomas fundamentally revises the ‘textbook’ Gramsci – a theorist whose work centred on a primordial East/West distinction, focused on the superstructure, and upon the ways a ruling class secured subaltern consent to its rule. Placing special emphasis on the Notebooks from 1932, Thomas critiques readings of Gramsci by Perry Anderson and Louis Althusser, and finds that Gramsci articulated the ‘philosophy of praxis’ not…
Liberalism: Contradictions and counterhistories
Stephen Lyon Endicott. Raising the Workers' Flag: The Workers' Unity League of Canada, 1930–1936
From December 1929 to November 1935, the communist Workers' Unity League of Canada (WUL) struggled to revolutionize the country's trade union movement. The WUL championed demands for better wages and conditions, organized workers into industrial unions, led the unemployed in battles for better relief and for employment insurance, fought on-the-job discrimination, struggled for “the right to organize, strike, and picket, and to free speech and ass…

The Canadian passive revolution, 1840-1950
Passive revolution', understood here as a specific moment of global capitalism, provides an indispensable key to Canadian history, especially that unfolding from the 1840s (when seigneurs, Tories, agrarian radicals and democrats were forcibly unified through a top-down, British-orchestrated administrative revolution) to the 1940s (when plutocrats, Liberals and Conservatives, trade unionists and social democrats were forcibly unified through the i…

The Liberal Order Framework: A Prospectus for a Reconnaissance of Canadian History
How can we get beyond the present socio-cultural versus national-political impasse in Canadian history writing? By a historical practice of re/connaissance, which begins not with the essentialist project of ‘rethinking Canada,’ but rather with the more modest goal of mapping the Canadian state as a project of liberal rule in northern North America. Those who undertake this re/connaissance of the complex moment of liberal hegemony called Canada wi…

A Third Kind of Marxism: Colin McKay, Socialist Political Economy and the Great Depression
The Canadian socialist movement has a more varied intellectual history than many contemporary socialists believe. Although it is often presented in caricatured, stereotypical terms as a series of epic battles between good and evil (the democratic left against the totalitarian Communists; the true Marxists against the revisionists; the revolutionaries against the reformers, etc.), the history of the Canadian socialist movement would be much more i…

Historians, Anthropology, and the Concept of Culture
ALTHOUGH MARXIST SOCIAL HISTORIANS have proclaimed that anthropology provides an analytical framework for modem social history, they have not specified which specific schools of anthropology should be sustained nor which anthropological theories have been validated by historical investigation. Contemporary debates in anthropology and historical anthropology reveal that historical materialism and anthropology use different methods of abstraction a…

By Wisdom, Wile or War: The Provincial Workmen's Association and the Struggle for Working-Class Independence in Nova Scotia, 1879-97
ALTHOUGH THE PROVINCIAL Workmen's Association, founded in Spring-hill, Nova Scotia, in 1879, represented the greatest achievement of maritime workers in the nineteenth century, historians, guided by the records and recollections left by Robert Drummond and the union's demise in the massive strikes of 1909-11, have generally considered it as a highly conservative union, wedded to a conciliatory approach to management and reluctant to use the strik…

Capital and Labour in the Halifax Baking and Confectionery Industry during the Last Half of the Nineteenth Century
The Halifax baking and confectionery industry was characterized by the uneasy coexistence of craft bakeries, manufactories, and one factory. A stratified system of production produced a stratified labour force, in which the journeymen bakers alone were able to organize a union. Their struggles reveal a cleavage between factory workers and other journeymen in the industry. L'industrie de la patisserie et de la confiserie a Halifax se caracterisait…

LES SOLDATSDEL'ABIME, a race apart, purest proletarians: today one could write a large book on images of coal miners in fiction, in jour nalism, and in historiography. Distinctive mining mythologies have developed in each country, yet on closer inspection they follow international patterns dictated by fairly similar pattern of coal's rise and decline in most of western capitalist economies.
