Assessing the Acceptability of a Tenofovir-Based Rectal Microbicide Douche among Young Men who Have Sex with Men: Results from ATN-DREAM (ATN 163)
Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) remain disproportionately affected by HIV, yet adherence to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains suboptimal. Rectal microbicides formulated as douches offer a behaviorally congruent alternative by leveraging existing douching practices. This study assessed the acceptability of a tenofovir-based rectal microbicide douche among YMSM. Eight YMSM (M = 20.9 years; range 18-24 years) participated in …
Community Adaptations to Create “Inside and Outside” Cultural Spaces: The Case of Dukuh Traditional Village in Indonesia
Community adaptation is a way for a community or a community group to agree on its cultural space so that people's lives run harmoniously and prosperously. Adaptation is interrelated with how people respond to their environment, customs, and various external influences. This is also the case with the people of Dukuh Traditional Village, in Indonesia. This village is close to the forest. In addition, customs with religious rituals make the Dukuh T…
Strontium concentration, radiogenic ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) and stable ( δ 88 Sr) strontium isotope systematics in a controlled feeding study
Transhumance and palaeodiet are two central themes in archaeology and using chemical analysis of bones and teeth to reconstruct trends and patterns in diet and mobility has become a cornerstone of bioarchaeology. This study has investigated strontium concentration ([Sr]), radiogenic (87Sr/86Sr) and stable strontium (δ88Sr) isotope systematics in a controlled feeding experiment on domestic pigs designed to simulate terrestrial versus marine protei…

Continuity and Change in English Childcare Policy 1960-2000
The failure of the UK to develop a coherent, universal, public system of childcare in the post-war period is well known. More recently, there has been a strong debate as to whether the New Labour Governments' explicit childcare policies, first set out in 1998, represent a substantial change or whether policy continuities are more significant. This paper uses ideas about incremental policy change, together with a close investigation of archival as…

Hedda Hopper's Hollywood: Celebrity Gossip and American Conservatism
Hedda Hopper was, to use the author Jennifer Frost’s euphemistic term, a “publicist of private talk” (p. 32). With her rival Louella Parsons, Hopper fully earned a reputation as one of the “guardian furies” of classical-era Hollywood, one of Tinseltown’s twin “gargoyles of gossip” (pp. 1, 19). At the height of Hopper’s fame in the 1950s, her column reached an estimated 32 million readers. She encouraged movie fans to enjoy the cheap thrills of Ho…
Being embedded: A way forward for ethnographic research
At a time when ethnography (as both method and methodology) is seen to be 'at risk' from strictures placed upon it by ethics approval procedures and the like, it is increasingly valued by the wider, non-academic community. This is particularly true of organizations involved in processes that aim to effect change (social, cultural, behavioural), and individuals who are, like the ethnographers, trained and encouraged to be reflexive practitioners. …
No increase in HIV or sexually transmissible infection testing following a social marketing campaign among men who have sex with men
BACKGROUND: A social marketing campaign ran in 2004 in the Victoria to increase rates of HIV/sexually transmissible infection (STI) testing among men having sex with men (MSM). METHODS: To evaluate the initiative data from HIV sentinel surveillance, laboratory data on testing for HIV/STIs and STI/HIV testing uptake reported in annual surveys were analysed. RESULTS: The sentinel surveillance network showed no increase in the overall extent of HIV …
Patterns of Development in Work/Family Reconciliation Policies for Parents in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK in the 2000s
Work/family reconciliation policies have increasingly become part of employment-led social policy at both EU and Member State levels. Given this trend, we expected to see more attention to policies that unequivocally promote women's employment: childcare provision and the promotion of flexible working, together with reform of leaves that permit labour market exit in order to care for children. Our examination of the nature of change in policy goa…

UK Work/Family Balance Policies and Gender Equality, 1997-2005
Since 1997, the UK has developed policies to address the issue of work/family balance in the form of childcare services, leaves for childcare, and the right to request flexible working patterns. We examine the policy aims and nature of these different approaches and assess how far they promote gender equality, which we define in terms of the possibility of making a “real” or “genuine” choice for men and women to “work and care.”

The struggle over media literacy
The goal of media literacy is to help people become sophisticated citizens rather than sophisticated consumers. The authors argue against a purely “text-centred” approach in which media texts can be deconstructed and analyzed so we can choose among them. Instead, media literacy should integrate a textual analysis with questions of production and reception. An analysis of the structure of media institutions is particularly important if Americans a…
Gender and Welfare Regimes: Further Thoughts
This article reviews the feminist critique of Gøsta Esping-Andersen's typology of welfare regimes and revisits my earlier (1992) analysis of gender and welfare regimes together with criticisms of that work. I briefly discuss some methodological issues and attempt to justify my own choice of variables and of an explanatory model derived from empirical historical work. I pay particular attention to critiques that insist on the use of caring regimes…
Implementing Care Management: Issues in Relation to the New Community Care
The official guidance on the new policy of community care emphasized care management as the means of securing needs-led services, together with user empowerment and choice. This paper uses data from eighteen months intensive fieldwork in five local authorities, first, to examine the very different interpretations of care management in these authorities; secondly, to examine two major sources of difficulty in the implementation of care management …
