  • Government Infrastructure Investment Dividends and Urban Development

    Open Access•John Pullen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Urban developments in expanding economies require increasing investments in infrastructure and services. If these are not provided by developers and landowners, the cost has to be met by the government and taxpayers. Financial benefits of economic development accrue to developers and landowners in the form of increased land values, but previous attempts to redirect a share of these benefits to the government have rarely been successful. A more lo…

  • Malthus on the Desire of Bettering Our Condition and the Vis Medicatrix Reipublicae

    John Pullen•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2019•References: 8

A well-known and fundamental element in the population theory of Thomas Robert Malthus is the concept of prudential or moral restraint. A less well-known but just as fundamental element is the “desire of bettering our condition,” also described by Malthus as the “vis medicatrix reipublicae,” which has been freely translated as the healing power of society. This article aims to explain the meaning and significance given by Malthus in his theory of…

  • Variables and Constants in the Theology of T. R. Malthus

    John Pullen•ARTICLE•History of Economics Review•2016

Professor Sergio Cremaschi has argued that Malthus's views on theology and ethics did not remain static, but evolved over his lifetime. This article acknowledges that there were changes, but argues that they were not of major significance, and that Malthus's spiritual attitudes did not significantly alter. Malthus's status as a political economist is also discussed, together with comments on his character.

  • The Other Correspondence of T. R. Malthus: A Preliminary List and Selected Commentary

    John Pullen•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2016•References: 13

The extensive correspondence between T. R. Malthus and David Ricardo has been documented in The Works and Correspondence of David Ricardo, edited by P. Sraffa (1951–73). Malthus conducted an even more extensive correspondence with correspondents other than Ricardo. The dates of this other correspondence and the names of the correspondents are listed—seventy-six have so far been identified, with a further four unnamed—together with the known locat…

    Open Access•John Pullen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 7

The article argues that, in seeking to establish criteria for distributive justice, consideration should be given to the manner in which Earth's natural resources are owned. The views of seven notable authorities on this issue are presented, ranging from an unrestricted right of private ownership to some form of public or collective ownership. • Henry George's Land Reform: The Distinction between Private Ownership and Private Possession

    Open Access•John Pullen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2001•Cited by: 4

Henry George stated that the taxation of land rent would amount to the abolition of the institution of private ownership of land, thereby alienating all those who, whether for economic or ideological reasons, regard the private ownership of land as essential for social order and progress. George believed that under his proposed reform the private ownership of land would be replaced by private possession. But his distinction between ownership and …

They can be classified under eight main headings. (i) He admitted that the pressure of population causes much misery and evil, but he did not accept that this in any way impugned the benevolence of the Creator. George believed that under his proposed reform the private ownership of land would be replaced by private possession. But his distinction between ownership and …
