  • Workshop Report

Open Access•Stephanie Holmgren, Shannon Bell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Harmonized language is essential to finding, sharing, and reusing large-scale, complex data. Gaps and barriers prevent the adoption of harmonized language approaches in environmental health sciences (EHS). To address this, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and partners created the Environmental Health Language Collaborative (EHLC). The purpose of EHLC is to facilitate a community-driven effort to advance the development and …

  • Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (Simd) indicators as predictors of mortality among patients hospitalised with Covid-19 disease in the Lothian Region, Scotland during the first wave

Open Access•Marcello Scopazzini, Marcello S Scopazzini et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2023

SIMD as an aggregate measure of deprivation was not predictive of mortality in our cohort when other exposure measures were accounted for. However, we identified a two-fold increased risk of mortality in patients residing in areas with greater income-deprivation and/or number of hospitalisations due to alcohol. In areas where aggregate measures fail to capture pockets of deprivation, exploring the impact of specific SIMD indicators may be helpful…

  • Catalyzing Knowledge-Driven Discovery in Environmental Health Sciences through a Community-Driven Harmonized Language

Open Access•Stephanie Holmgren, Rebecca Boyles et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Harmonized language is critical for helping researchers to find data, collecting scientific data to facilitate comparison, and performing pooled and meta-analyses. Using standard terms to link data to knowledge systems facilitates knowledge-driven analysis, allows for the use of biomedical knowledge bases for scientific interpretation and hypothesis generation, and increasingly supports artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Due to th…

  • The limits of motivation theory in education and the dynamics of value-embedded learning (VEL)

Christopher G Duncan, Chris Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Over the past twenty-five years, or so, considerable advances have been made in understanding how learning occurs in the brain, though much of this research is still to make its way into education. One contribution it should be making is to furnish the philosophical critique of past and current theory with supporting empirical evidence. For example, motivation theory and its cognate expectancy-value theory continue to be taught in teacher educati…

  • Two conflicting visions of education and their consilience

Christopher G Duncan, Chris Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Over the past two decades, two heavily funded initiatives of the Federal government of Australia have been founded on two very different and seemingly conflicting (if not antithetical) visions of education. The first, the Australian Values Education Program (AVEP, 2003–2010) enshrines what may be called an ‘embedded values’ vision of education; the second, the National Assessments Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN, 2008-present) enshrines a ‘…
