Does Equity‐Based Compensation Make CEOs Engage in More Corporate Misconduct Than Industry Norm
Drawing upon agency theory and institutional theory perspectives, this study examines the relationship between CEOs' equity‐based compensation and a firm's corporate misconduct in the restaurant industry. Specifically, the study proposes that option‐loaded CEOs tend to engage in more corporate misconduct than the industry average. In addition, this study investigates the moderating roles of market conditions and social‐relative performance for th…
What makes hospitality and tourism executives adopt information and communication technology
While previous hospitality and tourism research has concentrated on the benefits of information and communication technology (ICT) adoption from the perspectives of customers and suppliers, less attention has been placed on this stream of research from an upper echelons perspective. Furthermore, a limited number of studies have explored the relationship between ICT adoption and its financial implications. Using various theoretical foundations (i.…
Rethinking Design Ethics from the Perspective of Spinoza
This article proposes a new theoretical direction for design ethics, recognizing its significance in today's technology and philosophical debates on what constitutes goodness. Current discussions often overlook these debates, leaving designers in ethical dilemmas without principles to articulate design ethics. We argue for a philosophical and ontological approach encouraging reflections on systems and politics beyond economics. This article intro…
What skills do hospitality executives need for better financial outcomes from internationalization
This study examines how characteristics of top executives moderate the effect of internationalization on hospitality firms’ performance. Using US publicly-traded hospitality firms, this study conducts hierarchical linear modeling to investigate how executives’ functional background and operating ability influence the relationship between internationalization and financial outcomes. Findings of this study indicate that the functional background an…
The context of Songdok
This study explores the educational meaning of Songdok in traditional Korean education. Songdok refers to the act of memorizing text completely while reading it aloud; however, in traditional Korean education, it used to symbolize ‘learning’ itself. Historically, Songdok was regarded in extreme terms: being criticized as low-level memorization or encouraged as a religious ritual. In the Goryeo Dynasty, when civil service exams were introduced, So…
The Issue of Endogeneity and Possible Solutions in Panel Data Analysis in The Hospitality Literature
This study discusses endogeneity and causality issues in analyzing panel data and presents possible suggestions to alleviate them. Establishing causality is of paramount interest for researchers, yet the hospitality literature has tended to employ econometric techniques that rely heavily on modeling assumptions for endogeneity problems. Accordingly, this article provides practical guidance for hospitality researchers in addressing endogeneity iss…
Why Do South Koreans Spend So Much Money on Private Supplementary Tutoring? Motivations and Policy Implications
Investments in education are to be positive for the individual and to tend to be perceived as the wider good of society. However, the South Korean government is seeking to diminish the amount that families expend on private tutoring due to the excessive financial burden it places on households and the negative implications it may have for society. Despite these regulations, household expenditures on supplementary tutoring are on the rise in Korea…

Trends in total fat and fatty acid intakes and chronic health conditions in Korean adults over 2007–2015
Objective To investigate trends in total fat and fatty acid intakes and chronic health conditions among Korean adults over nine years between 2007 and 2015. Design Cross-sectional, observational study using a stratified, multistage probability sampling design at a national level. Intakes of total fat and fatty acids were estimated from 24 h dietary recalls by sex and age groups. Trends of total fat and fatty acid intakes were determined by multip…
When women are dissatisfied
We studied whether or not men and women respond differently to product failure by investigating how the level of satisfaction changes according to the failure severity and the locus of causality. We conducted an experiment with 2 types of failure attribution (company or consumer) and 2 different levels of failure severity (less severe or severe) with 237 participants. Results showed that, when product failure was severe, the women had lower satis…

Stable Carbon Isotopic Composition in Annual Rings of a Pine Tree ( Pinus Densiflora ) from Yeongwol, Korea
Stable carbon isotope ratios were measured on the alpha-cellulose in tree rings of a pine tree ( Pinus densiflora ) from Yeongwol, Korea. We developed an annual-resolution δ 13 C series (1835–1905) by correcting the measured data for changes in δ 13 C of air to minimize non-climatic influences. To investigate the climatic signal in the δ 13 C series, we performed correlation analysis between δ 13 C and the Cheugugi climate data. The Cheugugi prec…
Nutritional health attitudes and behaviors and their associations with the risk of overweight/obesity among child care providers in Michigan Migrant and Seasonal Head Start centers
Our findings support that nutrition education or health interventions targeting MSHS child care providers are urgently necessary. These efforts might be an efficient and effective approach for improving the nutritional health status of young children enrolled in MSHS programs
Effects of Product Failure Severity and Locus of Causality on Consumers' Brand Evaluation
Although product failure causes both marketers and consumers to incur substantial damage and losses, failures are often very difficult for marketers to control. Building on the defensive attribution literature, we investigated how locus of causality and outcome severity of product failure interactively shape consumers' ( N = 366) brand evaluation. The results showed that after a product failure experience, consumers responded with the least favor…
Reproducibility and validity of an FFQ developed for the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES)
Objective We aimed to evaluate the reproducibility and validity of the newly developed FFQ for the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and to estimate the measure’s calibration factors. Design The 109-item FFQ was administered twice, approximately 9 months apart. We also collected four seasonal 3 d dietary records (DR) as a reference method. Correlation coefficients and joint classification were computed to compare i…
A Study on Trapping CO 2 Using Molecular Sieve for 14 C AMS Sample Preparation
At the Seoul National University accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratory, we are planning to develop an automated sample preparation system for higher throughput of radiocarbon dating. This system will consist of several sections, including a combustion line, CO 2 trap, graphitization system, and so on. We usually collect CO 2 by cryogenic trapping. However, since handling liquid nitrogen is expected to be rather difficult, we are interest…
