The leverage points framework enhanced by an unconscious perspective
Many sustainability transformation studies use the leverage points framework (LPF) to point to deep levers such as paradigms and worldviews, but rarely explain how those levers move. We propose an extended unconscious (EU) perspective to address what LPF leaves unspecified, arguing that deep understanding of unconscious dynamics is crucial. In our use, the EU perspective synthesizes diverse recent mind science accounts of the unconscious into an …
Gender gap and gender data gap in futures research: Focusing on the studies employing the Delphi technique
The gender gap in futures research, rooted in male dominance, results in limited visibility of female futurists and neglect of women's issues. This study focuses on the gender data gap as an indicator of the existing gender gap in futures research and analyze the literature employing the Delphi technique—a widely employed research method in this field. When societal gender gaps influence data collection and utilization, a gender data gap arises, …

Exploring how interest groups affect regulation and innovation based on the two-level games: The case of regulatory sandboxes in Korea
Identity Frame as the Anchor of Interstate Conflicts: The Case of the United States–North Korea Denuclearization Negotiation
This study examines the fundamental causes of intractable conflict and deadlocked negotiation by centering on identity. The cognitive variables of identity are derived, and the causal layered analysis framework is used to analyze the influencing mechanism among cognitive layers. This research assumes that conflicts are influenced by interactions among key variables of the identity frame in the cognitive layer: “ingroup definition,” “outgroup defi…

A critical juncture in universal healthcare: Insights from South Korea’s Covid-19 experience for the United Kingdom to consider
Universal healthcare systems have undergone a severe stress test in the form of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With respect to the system-embedded allocation of decision-making powers and responsibilities among actors, different modalities have been revealed in the COVID-19 responses of South Korea and the UK, respectively. This article compares and analyzes how these two countries’ healthcare systems have reacted to COVID-19. Although both have …
Anticipatory governance for newcomers: Lessons learned from the UK, the Netherlands, Finland, and Korea
Anticipatory governance (AG) is defined as a “system of systems” that employs foresight to create future plans and execute relevant actions. Recently, various frameworks of AG have been introduced, but there is little practical information available for newcomers on how to do this. This research conducted a framework-based comparative country analysis to provide lessons learned for newcomers in the sphere of foresight-linked AG. By evaluating the…

Association of Ambient Air Pollution with Increased Liver Enzymes in Korean Adults
An association between exposure to air pollution and liver enzymes in certain areas or older people has been reported in the literature; however, it cannot be generalized to the general population. We investigated the association between air pollution, liver enzyme levels, and alcohol consumption using nationwide data of South Korean adults. Air pollutants included particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM 10 ), nitrogen dioxide …

What Lies between the Religious and the Secular: Education beyond the Human
The current age is characterised by many as secular, and a source of such a characterisation can be found in the Nietzschean claim that thoughts about there being some ultimate reality have to be jettisoned, and human existence and the world need to be embraced as they are. That claim is renewed by some secular thinkers who insist that education has to be reconceived in ways congenial to the new age. It is argued that central to their logic is th…
Korea as the Wave of a Future: The Emerging Dream Society of Icons and Aesthetic Experience
A familiar perspective on social change suggests that over the past several thousand years, human settlements have changed in size and complexity from hunting and gathering, to agricultural, to industrial, and most recently to information societies. Some theorists have recently suggested that the world may be moving into dream societies of icons and aesthetic experience. Evidence is presented here that indicates that South Korea may be leading th…
Fairness, Globalization, and Public Institutions: East Asia and Beyond
Who benefits from the interconnected processes often referred to as globalization? Is it a relatively few people, with most others either being harmed or at least not helped? Are the good things that globalization produces, whatever they are, widely shared? What processes lead us in one direction or another? This book examines a key dimension of globalization: its fairness. It investigates the meaning of and role fairness plays when public instit…
