  • Colkelbie Sow and Northern Europe

    Alasdair A MacDonald•ARTICLE•Anglia - Zeitschrift für…•2025

This anonymous, late-medieval Scottish poem has presented editors and critics with many challenges. One such concerns a list of placenames pertaining to northern Germany and the Baltic. Corruption in the (unique) manuscript source is likely, and detailed arguments are proposed for emendations to the text. It is suggested that the anonymous poet’s evident interest in the north-German/Scandinavian area may owe something to the marriage (1469) of Ma…

  • The Fall of the Leaf, and Autumnal Tints

    Alasdair A MacDonald•ARTICLE•English Studies•2013

A well-known marker of the difference between British and American English is the choice between fall or autumn for the third season of the year. This note explores the evolution of the difference, and suggests that fall may have had an original reference to the seasonal discoloration, rather than to the dropping, of leaves

This volume, the first of two concentrating on the late Middle Ages and the Early…

  • Centres of Learning

Jan Willem Drijvers, Alasdair A MacDonald•BOOK•Centres of Learning•1995

Centres of Learning deals with the relation between learning and the locations in which that learning is carried out. It is the editors' belief that the character (and, in part, the content) of a particular aspect of learning is determined — or at least influenced — by the circumstances in which the learning process takes place. The contributions in this book deal with various aspects of learning, in a broad historical and geographical perspectiv…
