Meaning Preordained or Meant To Be MK: My entry into the field of medical humanities at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in 1981 places me in the second generation of those to enter a field whose roots go back to 1960 Although not part of the initial wave of immigrants to the shores of this new multi-(or for some, trans-) disciplinary academic endeavor, the second wave was still a time when many of us from disparate fields-my training i…

    Martin Kohn•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2011

On one of my recent walks through the Cleveland Clinic, I noticed (once again) a beautiful dog sharing with me the pedestrian walkway over Carnegie Avenue. Who could have imagined, even as recently as a decade or so ago, a dog pawing along the antiseptic halls of our healthcare institutions? Of course, he had a trainer, was on a leash and was doing his work for a purpose—no doubt a well-defined one—backed up by studies of the salutary effect of u…

Martin B Koretzky, Martin Kohn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1978

A study was conducted to measure cross-situational consistency of the orthogonal dimensions of the two-factor model of social-emotional functioning. According to this model, large proportions of variance in social-emotional functioning can be accounted for by two orthogonal, highly replicable dimensions. The setting was Hawthorne-Cedar Knolls, a long-term institution for emotionally disturbed and delinquent youths; the subjects were 206 residents…
