New insights into the diet and economy of the central and northern Transjordan during the Iron Age
We investigate the diet and economy of the central and northern Transjordan during the Iron Age (c. 1,200 – 332 BCE). We present four new datasets from recent excavations providing results from zooarchaeology and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis on animal remains: Amman Citadel, Tell Zira’a, Tell Bleibil, and Tell Ushayer. This research shows a generalised pattern of a mixed agro-pastoral economy focussed on keeping sheep, goats, and c…

A Highland Perspective on the Archaeology and Settlement History of Sumatra
The first systematic archaeological research in the Highlands of Jambi in West Sumatra was pursued by a joint German-Indonesian project from 2002 to 2008. The project was attracted by the impressive megalithic remains which are known since the early 20th century. Different areas of this important cultural region were surveyed and six archaeological sites excavated in order to provide a comprehensive account of the settlement history of this regio…
Funktionen des Bildes in Altvorderasien
This article discusses the functions of images in ancient Near Eastern societies. It points out the continuities as well as the discontinuities in the development of iconic systems from the 10th to the 1st millennium B. C. The function of images in different social contexts is considered as a starting point for a better understanding of the diversity of cultural techniques in relation to the use of images. Such considerations question the teleolo…

From Distant Tales
This is the most comprehensive book devoted to Sumatra in more than half a century. It summarizes earlier studies, and provides a huge amount of new knowledge for the first time in readily accessible form. Sumatra is one of the world's largest islands, rich in flora and fauna, minerals and timber, and located at the midpoint of the maritime route between China and India. These are ideal conditions for the creation of a fascinating history. Sumatr…
The megalithic complex of highland Jambi
The highlands of Sumatra remain one of the most neglected regions of insular Southeast Asia in terms of history and archaeology. No comprehensive research program incorporating both a survey and excavations within a defined geographical or environmental zone has been carried out there since Van der Hoop (1932) conducted his study of the megaliths on the Pasemah plateau in the 1930s. Meanwhile, Van der Hoop's investigations and several other archa…
Ashurbanipal's Headhunt
The severed head is a topic that has always attracted popular attention. In Christian art, for example, it was an image of martyrdom and fearless resistance against suppression. In contrast, popular accounts of headhunting have been used to convey an image of the primitive for Western audiences since the nineteenth century (e.g. Panel 1992). In anthropology headhunting has long been discussed in terms of materialist and evolutionary models. Only …
