Fake News in Ancient Greece
Scholars have recognized that fake news is not a phenomenon peculiar to the 21st century. While efforts for a more focused approach to fake news in the ancient world have been carried out in the field of Roman history, the phenomenon of fake news in ancient Greece has received limited attention. The contributions in this volume offer a selective approach to this phenomenon by applying media and cultural studies instruments to ancient texts. They …
P.Ross. Georg. I 21
Greek papyri dating between the 2 nd and the 4 th centuries AD bear testimony to treatises about hieroscopy, the study of animal entrails, especially the liver, for the purpose of divination. The present article is dedicated to the best preserved handbook on this divinatory technique, P.Ross. Georg. I 21, which provides detailed instructions on how to “read” the entrails. A new critical edition of the papyrus is presented with translation and com…
Eine griechische Gestellungsbürgschaft aus dem spätantiken Herakleopolis
This article presents the edition of a hitherto unpublished declaration of surety in Greek from 6th century Middle Egypt kept in the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library. In this fragmentary document surety is provided for a gardener (?) called Neilammon son of Timotheos. Of particular interest in the papyrus is an attestation of a notary called Elias unknown to date, who also appears in two other Vienna papyri published in this vo…

Sb Xxiv 16148
The article contains a re-edition of P.Vindob. G 30904; which has been identified as “notice about the release of a slave or a prisoner” according to the heading in its edition in Sammelbuch. Instead the papyrus contains a short; but visually impressive note; consisting only of an invocation; note of dispatch and address. It obviously served as a kind of consignment note accompanying a parcel; which itself is not designated in the letter
Enteuxis Concerning Illegal Sale of Cedria
The Greek papyrus published in this article is a fragment of an enteuxis from Ptolemaic Egypt. It probably dates to the middle of the 2nd century BC and its provenance is the Fayyum. It concerns the illegal sale of cedria; a substance widely used in mummification. The petitioner was apparently a tax farmer who won the state concession for the distribution of and tax upon cedria presumably for the Arsinoite nome. He seems to complain that the ibio…
The present article offers the first edition of an unpublished Greek fragment of a parchment codex kept in the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library. The fragment contains passages from the Book of Ezekiel (12; 16–19 and 23–25). Its significance lies in the fact that very few testimonies to this text are preserved on papyrus and parchment from Christian Egypt
The article presents a new interpretation of a published Byzantine papyrus letter from the Collection of the Austrian National Library. Its first editor argued that it offered a precious testimony to the religious upheavals in Alexandria on the eve of its conquest by the Arabs. This article shows that the papyrus was found in the Fayum and does not necessarily come from Alexandria, and that the text should be dated to the late sixth or early seve…
The present article contains the first edition of a hitherto unpublished papyrus from the Collection of the Austrian National Library. The papyrus dates from the Byzantine period of Egypt, comes from the Hermopolite nome and contains the contract for the lease of a house. The edition is accompanied by a detailed introduction to and commentary on the fragmentary text, an analysis of the structure of the document, and suggestions for supplementing …
The article contains the first edition of a hitherto unpublished Greek papyrus letter from the Collection of the Austrian National Library. The text dates from the late 6th century of our era and is addressed to a comes Menas. The provenance of the text is unknown. Most probably it comes from the Arsinoite or the Hermopolite nome. The edition is accompanied by a detailed introduction to and commentary on the papyrus
