  • Foreign Overflights in the Canadian Arctic and the Defense of National Sovereignty in the Region, 1923-1937

Lawrence Taylor, Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2022

The article analyzes the cases in which planned and executed overflights of the Canadian Arctic by foreign expeditions during the interwar period (1919–1939) appeared to challenge Canada’s sovereignty in the region. Aviation offered a potent tool for exploring the unknown expanses in the Arctic Basin but also threatened Canada’s ability to exert sovereign control over the areas it claimed as its own. Though having a minimal effect in terms of vio…

  • From Turbulent Skies to Calmer Air Currents

    Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•2018•References: 4

This article traces the long and difficult road towards the establishment of the first U.S.–Mexico aerial routes. It focuses on seven particular aspects of transborder aviation relations between Mexico and the U.S in the years between 1910 and the early 1930s: transborder observation and exhibition flights; the search for and rescue of lost U.S. pilots in the Mexico border region; U.S. aerial incursions into Mexican territory; goodwill flights; t…

  • The monorail ‘revolution’ of the 1950s and 1960s and its legacy

    Open Access•Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•The Journal of Transport History•2016

The paper uses a variety of primary and secondary sources to analyse why monorail proposals initiated by Goodell, Alweg, Lockheed and other manufacturers during the 1950s and 1960s failed to gain preference among transport planning authorities over alternative modes of transport such as conventional rail, subways, buses and eventually light rail. The article examines the ways in which improved versions of the monorail models developed during thes…

  • Fighting for the patria on the ‘wrong’ side of the border

    Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2007•References: 3

This article examines the role of the Mexican consuls in southern California during the counterinsurgency campaign conducted by the Porfirio Díaz government against the Magonista rebels in Baja California in 1911. It traces the development of the Mexican and U.S. intelligence networks in the border region noting the key role played by the consular officials of both countries with respect to what was, in effect, a binational system. The article de…

  • The border as a zone of conflict

    Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2005•References: 5

The article examines the participation of foreign volunteers—the majority of whom were American—in the campaigns in northern Chihuahua during the initial years (1910–1912) of the Mexican Revolution and the question of U.S. neutrality concerning this issue. It analyzes the views and policies of the U.S. government with respect to this particular aspect of the neutrality problem created by the rebel contraband flow of men and supplies across the bo…

The article describes the various types of educational and work‐training ties which have been established in each of the corridor regions, the organizations involved, as well as their position within the overall context of…

  • Gunboat Diplomacy's Last Fling in the New World

    Open Access•Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 12

In considering acts of military intervention by foreign powers which occurred in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, one is apt to think of the years 1914, 1916 and 1919, when U.S. forces invaded or occupied portions of Mexican territory. There was, however, one case of intervention of this sort during the revolution in which U.S. military personnel were not involved–the landing of a small party of British marines belonging to the H.M.S. “Shear…

  • The Great Adventure

    Open Access•Lawrence D Taylor•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1986•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Scholarly studies of the Mexican revolutionary period seldom have approached the subject from the standpoint of how this momentous struggle was actually waged by its combatants. While considerable investigation has rendered valuable insights into leading personalities and movements of the time, no comparable effort has been made to unravel the myriad military complexities and paradoxes of one of the major wars waged on the North American continen…
