[ Abstract Rural communities through the prism of hagiographic memory in central Gaul during the Merovingian period Hagiography makes it possible to write the history of religious communities, but it would be a pity to confine ourselves to this obvious contribution. This article will therefore focus on the rural communities of the dioceses of the ecclesiastical province of Bourges. Although the rural world is evoked, the peasants are essentially …

    Fernand Peloux•ARTICLE•Analecta Bollandiana•2025

This article examines the hagiographic documentation on Sts Justa and Rufina of Seville. An edition of the Visigothic Passion ( BHL 4566) reveals an Aquitaine branch that presents an older version of the text. The unpublished version BHL 4567 presents variants that demonstrate its antiquity. Finally, a fragment from Vic bears traces of a version from which BHL 4566 and BHL 4567 derive, and which a supplemented Golden Legend from Barcelona may hav…

    Fernand Peloux•ARTICLE•Revue d Histoire de l Eglise de…•2021

This article deals with the hagiographical documentation on St. Baudilla, whose cult is attested since the sixth century. It first examines the saint’s two passions, exploring the relations between the two. The short version is attested first, since the second half of the ninth century, mostly in the Iberian Peninsula. Next it examines an account of the translation in 878 of the saint’s relics from Nîmes to Cessy (in the diocèse of Auxerre), and …

Bishopric and Monasteries in Gévaudan during the Early Middle Ages. A reexamination of available sources for the early Middle Ages in Gévaudan allows us to question the territorial consequences of the implantation of Christianism in the city of the Gabales. The first one was the transfer from the capital of Javols, the ancient city, to Mende. Thanks to hagiographical sources in particular, the transfer can be dated to the period between the end o…
