Excavations in Parsonage Field, Watermoor Road, Cirencester, 1959
In 1958 a rescue excavation was carried out by Miss Mary Rennie, on behalf of the Ministry of Works, in the southern half of Parsonage Field, off the Watermoor Road, on ground now covered by the County Health Centre. Here the remains of a Roman building of some size were partly examined and an interesting mosaic pavement of geometric design and late date was uncovered. In that same year the Cirencester Roman Excavation Committee was set up
A Roman brooch from the Outer Hebrides, with notes on others of its type
In 1956 excavations were carried out by the Ministry of Works in Ben Becula and South Uist, Outer Hebrides, on sites lying within the area of the projected Rocket Range. Not long after the end of the season, one of the workmen who had been engaged on the excavations handed in a fibula said to have been found when filling in (fig. 1, 1, and pl. XXXVI b ). Although the site from which it was recovered could not be ascertained, it seems not unlikely…
An Iron Age A site on the Chilterns
In 1946 a visit to the barrow, which lies on the edge of the western scarp of Chinnor Common, and a cursory examination of the adjoining area, cultivated during the war, resulted in finds of pottery and other objects indicating Iron Age occupation. The site lies on the saddleback of a Chiltern headland, at a height of about 800 ft. O.D. Two hollow ways traverse the western scarp, giving access to the area from the Upper Icknield Way, which contou…

III.— Report on Excavations at Verulamium
Insula XVII lies within the Gorhambury estate, immediately opposite the theatre and on the east side of the modern drive, which here almost coincides with the underlying Watling Street. It was while excavation of the theatre was in progress in 1934 that part of this area was opened up, in the process of locating the foundations of the triumphal arch which had spanned the Roman street at this point. The frontage of an apparently imposing building,…
A Belgic Cremation Site at Stone, Kent
The Belgic Cremation site at Stone, Kent, was discovered during the week of January 31st to February 4th, 1939, by workmen engaged in quarrying operations in the Cotton Lane Pit, about one mile west of the village of Stone on the south bank of the Thames between Dartford and Greenhithe. The area is being worked by the Associated Portland Cement Company, who had the finds carefully collected and reported them to Mr S. Priest, F.G.S., Curator of th…
