  • Quantitative assessment of precipitation seasonality and summer surface wetness using ombrotrophic sediments from an Arctic Norwegian peatland

    Open Access•J E Nichols, Marie Walcott et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Seasonality of precipitation is an important yet elusive climate parameter in paleoclimatological reconstructions. This parameter can be inferred qualitatively from pollen and other paleoecological methods, but is difficult to assess quantitatively. Here, we have assessed seasonality of precipitation and summer surface wetness using compound specific hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of vascular plant leaf waxes and Sphagnum biomarkers extracted…

  • Carbon-isotope variation in Sphagnum from hummock-hollow complexes

    Open Access•Gregory D Price, Jane E McKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The interpretation of isotopic variation in Sphagnum from Holocene peat profiles rests upon several assumptions concerning physiological processes such as variation in CO 2 uptake and differences in the isotopic ratio of the source CO 2 . To examine such variability Sphagnum from hummock-hollow complexes from two raised bogs (Florencecourt and Clara) in Ireland was sampled for carbon isotope analysis. Samples were taken from relatively dry hummoc…

  • Biological evidence of past environments and climatic changes

    Open Access•Jon R Pilcher•ARTICLE•European Review•1994•References: 1

This paper will examine some of the types of biological evidence that allow us an insight into past environments and will consider some of the concepts that affect and limit our interpretations of past environments, and through them climatic changes. Scandinavia was the birthplace of palaeoenvironmental studies; basic to these being the concepts of speciation formulated in Uppsala by Linnaeus nearly 250 years ago. Sernander proposed his bog regen…

  • The Seigneurial Domestic Buildings of Brittany

    Open Access•Michael Jones, Gwyn I Meirion-Jones et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Since 1983 a multi-disciplinary survey of buildings of the manor-house type in the historic duchy of Brittany has been undertaken. The present paper presents provisional results, chiefly based on work up to the 1987 season in two of the five modern départements of the province: Côtes-du-Nord and Ille-et-Vilaine. After a brief historical introduction discussing the political and social context of the manoirs , their relationship to earlier seigneu…
