The West Front of Tintern Abbey Church, Monmouthshire
The conservation and repair of the west front of Tintern Abbey church, undertaken by Cadw between 2005 and 2010, provided an unrivalled opportunity to survey, record and analyse the design, construction and alteration of a much-celebrated example of medieval architecture. This paper considers in detail the moulding profiles and ornament of the west front and offers a developmental history for this part of the abbey church. Comparisons are made wi…
Thomas Telford The Archaeologist
Three watercolours painted by Thomas Telford survive within the Society's archives. Two of these watercolours are a plan and sections of an excavation of a Roman bath suite, supervised by Telford at Wroxeter, and the third is an elevation of the medieval Mardol gate over the Welsh bridge, Shrewsbury. The paintings provide an insight into his interest in archaeology and ancient buildings whilst practising as an architect in Shropshire, before he b…
Archaeology and the Death of Coastal Fishing in Britain
Archaeologists have only become interested in the physical remains of coastal fishing practices in Britain over the past decade. In many recent studies they have demonstrated that the surviving techniques have a very long history. Their work is complimented by the work of oral historians and folk life curators, who are attempting to record the traditions, language and equipment of the last few practitioners of these ancient crafts. At the same ti…
The Strata Florida Manikin
The beautiful, 13cm tall figurine from Strata Florida (Wales, UK) surfaced in 1902 but disappeared into oblivion soon afterwards – because it was deemed an ethnographic import from the American Northwest Coast. It was rediscovered in the early nineties by the second author. In this paper, the 'Strata Florida Manikin' is placed in the context of the northern and north-western European woodcarvings; it is argued that the 2000 year old boxwood figur…
St Davids Bishop's Palace, Pembrokeshire
This paper provides a comprehensive description of St Davids Bishop's Palace. Almost completely built under the patronage of Bishop Henry de Gower (1328–47), it represents the most remarkable secular building in the Decorated style. Detailed analysis of each elevation of the palace has enabled sixteen phases of work to be identified, nine of which are grouped into three building campaigns sponsored by Bishop de Gower. This has enabled the evoluti…
