  • Symbols of Protection: The Significance of Animal-ornamented Shields in Early Anglo-Saxon England

    Tania M Dickinson•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 15

THE SIGNIFICANCE of shields with animal ornament on the boss and/or board in early Anglo-Saxon society is sought in the coincidence of artefactual, stylistic and iconographic symbolism. Twenty shields buried in the 6th to earliest 7th century, together with seventeen further mounts which were probably originally designed for shields, form the basis of a systematic typological review; decoration in Salin's Style I is emphasised. Analysis of dating…

  • Ii: Typology of Metal Shield Fittings

Open Access•Tania M Dickinson, Tania Dickinson et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1992

The classification presented here is based on a multivariate analysis of the shield bosses from the Upper Thames region, carried out in 1975 (Dickinson 1976, 274–90, figs. 25–9). Intuitive methods had failed to work, just as they had probably failed for previous scholars, because shield bosses seem to lack strikingly obvious diagnostic features. By contrast, the adoption of an explicit and more broadly-based approach not only took advantage of th…

  • An Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Settlement at Botolphs, Bramber, West Sussex

Mark Gardiner, Caroline Cartwright et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1990•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Three early Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured buildings dating to the late fifth or early sixth century were discovered during excavation. Finds suggest that stamp-decorated and grass-tempered pottery was made in the settlement. Burnt daub with a lime-washed surface was found, possibly from other, larger buildings. In the late tenth or early eleventh century the site was reoccupied. Traces of five timber buildings from this second phase of activity wer…

  • Fowler's Type G Penannular Brooches Reconsidered

    Tania M Dickinson•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1982•Cited by: 5•References: 4

BASIC, but rigorous, classificatory analysis is still a principal requirement in the archaeology of western and northern Britain in the early post-Roman period. The largest group of mainland penannular brooches—type G in Mrs Elizabeth Fowler's classification—is therefore reviewed in the light of recent discussions, and for the first time most are illustrated. Clear distinctions of type in date and distribution are confirmed, notably between those…
