  • Viewing the Bayeux Tapestry, Now and Then

    Christopher Norton•ARTICLE•Journal of the British…•2019

Plans to redisplay the Bayeux Tapestry raise anew the questions as to where and how it was originally intended to be displayed. Analysis of the linen fabric provides new insights into the tapestry’s design and manufacture, and enables its original length to be calculated. Re-examination of the (largely destroyed) 11th-century cathedral at Bayeux and of its liturgical layout demonstrates that the tapestry would have fitted neatly into the nave wes…

  • Creating Jobs, Manufacturing Unity: Ulster Unionism and Mass Unemployment 1922-34

    Christopher Norton•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•2001

The inter-war recession and resultant mass unemployment presented a serious problem for the new Northern Ireland government. Having weathered republican attempts to destabilise the state, the Unionist government found its credibility questioned by a core element of its own support: the Protestant working class. In its efforts to galvanise support and ensure Unionist unity the government resorted to a series of strategies to alleviate the unemploy…

  • The Anglo-Saxon Cathedral at York and the Topography of the Anglian City

    Christopher Norton•ARTICLE•Journal of the British…•1998

Topographical analysis of the medieval buildings around the Minster at York indicates that they preserve certain features of the pre-Conquest lay-out. The probable location of the Anglo-Saxon cathedral can be identified, along with other features of the early cathedral complex. A chronology of the development of the complex can be proposed, and this in turn sheds new light on the early development of Anglian York as a whole.

St Mary's Abbey, York was one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in the country and its buildings reflected its wealth and status. The quality of its architectural remains is of the highest order, and the collection of medieval sculpture from the site is outstanding. Indeed, the set of life-size column-figures brought to light in 1829 must count as one of the most exciting discoveries ever made in the field of the history of sculpture in this…
