  • Cists from Sunlaws, Roxburghshire

    J N Graham Ritchie•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1981

In December 1977 the discovery of a cist at Sunlaws, Roxburghshire, in the Roxburgh district of Borders Region, was reported to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. The cist (fig The capstone, a substantial block of red sandstone (1-25 m long, 0-75 m broad and 0-15 m thick), rested on a seating of flat slabs round the edge of the cist in order to keep it level. An unusual feature of its construction was the us…

Report of excavations on the Class I henge together with discussion (by E W Marwick) of the folklore surrounding an outlying standing stone, the Stone of Odin, and a catalogue of important 18th and 19th century illustrations of both sites. Excavation of the henge revealed that a ring of twelve stones was originally planned and that a complex stone and timber setting occupied the centre, grooved ware was found in both the central featur…

NT 117863. The cemetery consisted of three short cists, an urn burial and two cremation patches. One cist contained a crouched inhumation, probably female, accompanied by pig bones; a second cist showed no trace of burial though phosphate analysis tended to suggest one. The third cist held a crouched inhumation 14C-dated in 17th century bc, a Food Vessel, slug knife, strike-a-light and piece of iron ore. An Enlarged Food Vessel containing a femal…

  • Excavation of a chambered cairn at Dalineun, Lorn, Argyll

J N Graham Ritchie, Audrey S Henshall et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1974

NM 879267. The excavation of this multiperiod cairn clarified the relationship between a Clyde type chambered tomb and a simple massive cist formerly considered to be a potential protomegalith. The Clyde chamber proved to constitute the earliest building phase, set within a heel-shaped cairn and containing neolithic burials. Beaker burials formed a second phase of activity in the chamber, together with a small cist immediately outside the entranc…

    J N Graham Ritchie, A S Henshall et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1973

NM 929363. Excavation of a multi-period chambered cairn showed the passage-grave to be secondary to the simple closed chamber but shed no light on the morphological relationship between the two. The closed chamber was covered by a circular cairn which had been extended into an oval cairn when the passage-grave was built on to its perimeter. No dating evidence was found for the earlier tomb. Two phases of use were distinguished in the passage-grav…
