    A D Saunders•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 4

BUILDING ACCOUNTS for 1398–99 give detailed costs of the construction of a circular, brick, free-standing artillery tower. The artillery towers at Southampton and Canterbury were linked to existing wall circuits, and detached forts in France may be more comparable to the tower at Norwich

  • Lydford Castle, Devon

    A D Saunders, Tiya Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1980•Cited by: 2•References: 4

EXAMINATION of the structure of the stone tower and excavation of it and of the associated earthworks at Lydford, Devon, revealed that the earliest structure, presumed to be the firme domus referred to in the Pipe Rolls for 1195, had been a free-standing, purpose-built gaol. It was partly demolished, and the upper part entirely rebuilt towards the middle of the 13th century. The original ground floor was filled up and the tower enclosed by a ditc…

  • Excavations in the Church of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury 1955–58

    A D Saunders•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1978•Cited by: 3

THE EXCAVATION of Anglo-Saxon structures below the W. end of the 11th to 12th-century nave of the church of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, occupied three seasons between and 1957. Further, small-scale, excavation took place subsequently on the site of the pre-Conquest church of Sts Peter and Paul to test particular points. The need for the excavations in 1955 arose unexpectedly out of routine consolidation of the upstanding remains (which are …

  • The Chantry Priests' House at Farleigh Hungerford Castle

    Tiya Miles, T J Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1975

THE REPAIR and consolidation of the house built in 1430 by Sir Walter de Hungerford for the priests serving the chantries founded for his father and later himself at Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Somerset, provided an opportunity for detailed examination of the fabric and a re-interpretation of its internal arrangements. This examination was combined with limited excavation inside as well as outside the building, which produced groups of pottery ea…

  • King Charles's Castle, Tresco, Scilly

    Tiya Miles, T J Miles et al.•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•1970

King Charles’s Castle, Tresco, was built between 1548 and 1554. At the time it was the principal fortress in the Isles of Scilly and was intended to guard the entrance to the sheltered harbour of New Grimsby. The defences of Scilly were neglected for much of Elizabeth’s reign and when they were refortified in the 1590S St. Mary’s received all the attention. King Charles’s Castle was brought back into use and its entrance protected by earthworks o…

  • Tilbury Fort and the development of artillery fortification in the Thames estuary

    Open Access•A D Saunders•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1960•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Three of the four main periods of artillery fortification in England, when construction was undertaken on a national scale, are represented in the Thames: the castles and bulwarks of Henry VIII, the bastioned forts of the late seventeenth century, and the Royal Commission forts of the 1860's. The exception is the rather special case of the Martello Tower system, but its place here is taken by the steady improvements carried out at the end of the …
