Mexican Lacquer at the Victoria and Albert Museum
This study investigates the materials and techniques used in three Mexican platters, or bateas, from the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. Our analytical approach included the use of non-invasive techniques, such as infrared reflectography, scanning X-ray fluorescence, and digital microscopy, which informed limited but targeted sampling. Traditional pigments were identified, including indigo, carbon black, red lead, lead white, and orpiment,…
Mopa Mopa and Barniz de Pasto at the Victoria and Albert Museum
This paper summarises the research carried out so far on barniz de Pasto objects from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) and outlines future areas of development for our collection of Indigenous lacquer from Latin America. The V&A was the first UK public institution to identify objects decorated with barniz de Pasto within its collection. Two of these were acquired in 2015 and 2018; others had entered the collection between 1855 and 1902 but we…
New light on a Venetian lantern at the V&A
The carved and gilded wood lantern (Museum No. 7225–1860) was recognized as an extraordinary object even before its acquisition in 1860 from Jules Soulages of Toulouse, but its early history and function are uncertain. Based on the first detailed analysis of the lantern's structure, which show that it was made to be supported from below, the article explores the likely design sources used, and proposes that that it was made, probably c .1580–1620…
A Painted Casket in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London
This paper seeks to reassess the iconography and the physical condition of a fourteenth-century carved and painted casket in order to review its geographic origins and to consider its function. The intriguing, but under-researched casket (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum) has been discussed mainly in terms of the Tristan iconography of its lid, apparently derived from a German version of the Tristan story. Yet the casket has been generally d…
