  • Eating on the Road to Egypt

    Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•Bulletin for Biblical Research•2026

Food is complicated. Sharing food can create bonds of friendship between former strangers or exclude and isolate those unwelcome at our tables. The work of producing food can create relationships of interdependence or foster exploitation and fear. The morally complex nature of food is on full display in the narratives about Joseph recounted in Gen 37–50. On at least three occasions, meals allow the narrator to put issues of identity and belonging…

  • Reading Paul's Politics Wisely

    Open Access•Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•Studies in Christian Ethics•2025

Romans 13:1–7 continues to disturb. Paul's teaching that ‘every person’ should ‘be subject to the governing authorities’ has been used by Nazis, advocates for apartheid, and white supremacists, and appears deeply at odds with the frequently incarcerated apostle's experience of empire. The question of how to understand Rom. 13:1–7 has proven complicated for interpreters of all sorts, not least those interested in Christian political theology and e…

  • Becoming Militants of Reconciling Love

    Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•Journal of Theological…•2021

The renewed interest in moral formation among theological ethicists has elicited strong critiques from those concerned with an alleged overemphasis on human agency in character development. While such concerns cannot be brushed aside lightly, the solution is to situate human agency within a larger theological frame. As John Webster suggests, theological ethics should begin talking about the self and its agency by offering a “moral ontology” that …

  • Investigating large methane enhancements in the U.S. San Juan Basin

Open Access•Gabrielle Pétron, Benjamin Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2020

In 2014, a satellite-based map of regional anomalies of atmospheric methane (CH4) column retrievals singled out the fossil fuel rich San Juan Basin (SJB) as the biggest CH4 regional anomaly (“hot spot”) in the United States. Over a 3-week period in April 2015, we conducted ground and airborne atmospheric measurements to investigate daily wind regimes and CH4 emissions in this region of SW Colorado and NW New Mexico. The SJB, similar to other topo…

  • Methane source attribution in a U.S. dry gas basin using spatial patterns of ground and airborne ethane and methane measurements

Open Access•Ingrid Mielke-Maday, Stefan Schwietzke et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

An intensive coordinated airborne and ground-based measurement study was conducted in the Fayetteville Shale in northwestern Arkansas during September and October 2015 to compare and explain potential discrepancies between top-down and bottom-up estimates of regional natural gas (NG) methane (CH4) emissions. In situ mobile downwind measurements are used to document the ethane to methane enhancement ratios (ERs) in emission plumes from NG operatio…

  • A Bog Body and its Shoes from Amcotts, Lincolnshire

    Open Access•R C Turner, Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 9

An Investigation into the original documentary records of a bog body found near Amcotts, Lincolnshire, led to the rediscovery of a shoe which had been taken from the body in 1747. Not only is this one of the few surviving artefacts to have been found with a British bog body, but it is apparently also the first shoe, recovered by excavation, to have been subsequently preserved in an antiquarian collection. Moreover, recent advances in footwear stu…

  • Inscriptions on Leather Waste from Roman London

    Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•Britannia•1987

Inscription from a leather artifact One of the inscribed off-cuts (No. 12) is different from the others, both in terms of the nature of the leather and of the character of the inscription. It occurs in the centre of a relatively large (c. 232 mm x 130 mm) piece of thin leather with irregularly cut and torn edges. This is in contrast with the other inscriptions which generally occur on small pieces of unused leather waste, having at least one cris…

  • A Pair of Fifteenth-Century Spectacle Frames from the City of London

    Open Access•Michael Rhodes•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The riveted spectacle frames from Trig Lane (City of London) are the earliest from a deposit of known date. Their method of construction, from two bull metacarpal bones, is suggested, and their form compared with contemporary representations and the only other surviving examples from Wienhausen. Their possible mode of use is deduced from constructional details, contemporary illustrations and literary sources. A cluster of pinholes at the rim ends…
