    Open Access•D G Buckley, J D Hedges et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2001•Cited by: 8•References: 26

A long cropmark enclosure at Springfield, Essex, interpreted as a Neolithic cursus, was investigated betwee 1979–85 to confirm its date and establish a site sequence. The enclosure was c. 690 m long and 37–49 m wide the ditch being uninterrupted in all areas examined, features within the interior at the eastern end included a incomplete ring of substantial post-pits which it is suggested originally formed a complete circle. Open Access•D G Buckley, H Major et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1988•Cited by: 6•References: 4

Aerial survey in Essex has revealed a number of elongated enclosures interpreted as either long barrows or mortuary enclosures of Neolithic date. Excavation of one of these sites at Rivenhall in 1986 produced finds of flintwork and pottery which help to substantiate this hypothesis. A surface collection survey of the field containing the enclosure produced Mesolithic and Neolithic flintwork. A short discussion considers the Essex sites in their w…

  • Anglo-Saxon Burials and Later Features Excavated at Orsett, Essex, 1975

    J D Hedges, Jacob Hedges et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1985•References: 10

TWO ANGLO-SAXON RING-DITCH INHUMATION BURIALS and various later medieval features were found during the excavation of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure in 1975 at Orsett, Essex. A bag containing various objects suggesting magical or amuletic associations indicates that one burial was a lady's grave of the late 7th or even 8th century. These are the first certain examples in Essex of Saxon ring-ditch burials, and overlying barrows are postulated

  • Excavations at a Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure, Orsett, Essex, 1975

Open Access•John Hedges, David Buckley et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1978•Cited by: 11•References: 23

The Causewayed Enclosure at Orsett, Essex, was trial trenched in 1975 to determine the state of site preservation and confirm its postulated Neolithic date and site sequence. The enclosure consisted of three incomplete circuits of discontinuous ditch with an associated timber palisade slot lying inside and concentric to the middle ditch. Within the interior was an oval post hole structure of a contemporary date. Quantities of Mildenhall style pot…
