  • The urgent need for a global commitment to protect healthcare workers

Open Access•Ambrose Talisuna, Zabulon Yoti et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

box Health workers are essential for improved global health—but the COVID-19 pandemic is decimating them. Worse still, we don’t know the true toll the virus is taking on healthcare workers. In Africa, where the healthcare workforce of many countries was already desperately thin, the WHO counted nearly 42 000 sickened clinicians as of 9 September 2020,1 but the total number of infected surely outstrips that. And the pandemic is still unfolding: on…

  • Inter-referencing Asian Canadian Studies

Christine Kim, Christopher Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Inter-Asia Cultural Studies•2019•References: 4

This paper proposes to use inter-Asian methodologies to reread Asian Canadian Studies. As an intellectual and political project, Asian Canadian Studies has largely been constituted through its responses to the Canadian nation-state and anti-racism alliances but has failed to seriously engage with Asia as a critical problematic. Informed by theories and practices of inter-referencing developed through Inter-Asia critique, we reconsider the specifi…

  • Conservative Comforts

    C Lee, Christopher H T Lee•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Social work literature makes many claims to radicalism and reaches out with an ambitious intellectual agenda, to exhort changes in perspective and suggest changes in practice. However, all Western social work is caged tightly within a neo-liberal framework. Is it time therefore to seek a counter intuitive inspiration in the philosophical grounding of neo-liberalism itself? Can a social work value system connect somehow with a conservative traditi…

  • Rethinking Realisms through the Writings of Eileen Chang

    Christopher Lee, Christopher H T Lee•ARTICLE•Amerasia Journal•2006

Studies of Asian American writing during the Cold War are often guided by historical approaches that focus on the pressures of assimilation during the period. For Chinese Americans in particular, the tension between the United States and the People's Republic of China led to increased surveillance as the government cracked-down on illegal immigrants as well as those with progressive sympathies. At the same time, a number of prominent writers and …

  • Adab and Banarsipan

    Christopher Lee, Christopher H T Lee•ARTICLE•Comparative Islamic Studies•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In this article, I consider adab (“cultured respectfulness”) and banarsipan (“Banaras-ness”) as two ways-of-being for working-class Muslims in the Indian city of Varanasi. Each of these identities contain its own ontology and truths about the remembered past, the lived present, and the processes which created them, and thus serves as alternatives to nationalist and communal identities and the histories they present. These ways-of-being are examin…

  • Man, Work and Country

    Open Access•Christopher Lee, Christopher H T Lee•ARTICLE•Australian Literary Studies•1992

Lee conducts a semiotic analysis of the reception of Henry Lawson and his works, revealing the connections critics made between the work, the hand of the author and truth. Lee finds that the work of a colonial realist like Lawson was subordinated to a European aesthetic in the â shifting discursive territories which characterise cultureâ , subsequently excluding it from the validating process of the dominant culture
