  • Ignorance, Power and Harm

Open Access•Holly White, Alana Barton et al.•BOOK•Ignorance, Power and Harm•2018

  • Fragile Moralities and Dangerous Sexualities

    Alana Barton•BOOK•Fragile Moralities and Dangerous…•2017

In this book Alana Barton explores the social control and disciplining of unruly and 'deviant' women from the early nineteenth century to the present day. Her particular focus is the 'semi penal' institution, a category that includes refuges, reformatories and homes. She suggests that these occupy a unique position within the social control 'continuum', somewhere between the formal regulation of the prison and the informal control of the 'communi…

  • From empowering the shameful to shaming the empowered

    Open Access•Alana Barton, Howard Davis•ARTICLE•Crime Media Culture An…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Poor-blaming and poor-shaming have become intrinsic parts of the neoliberal order. For neoliberal discourse to enter and to dominate wider public ‘common sense’, vehicles of ‘populist language’ are required and the mass media has taken a central place in propagandising neoliberalism through their narration of poverty. This article focuses on so-called ‘reality TV’ and its neoliberal framing of the poor, particularly since 2007 and specifically in…

  • Show me the prison! The development of prison tourism in the UK

    Open Access•Alana Barton, Alyson Brown•ARTICLE•Crime Media Culture An…•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This paper presents an analysis of the historical development and interpretation of prison tourism in the UK Britain and the influence of this on current representations of prison museums via prison museum websites. While there has been significant examination of various prison museums overseas there has been comparatively little published on these institutions in the UK Britain. In response to contending pressures, prison museums have endeavoure…

  • Research Methods

Alana Barton•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2012

Criminology textbooks and other pedagogical resources, such as handbooks and encyclopaedias, rarely feature in the review sections of scholarly journals. This is arguably the result of a sense of academic weariness with a market that seems to be saturated with introductory texts at the expense of scholarly monographs. The vast increase in the number of textbooks in recent years can be attributed, in part, to the mass commercialization and commodi…

  • Dartmoor

Open Access•Alana Barton, Alyson Brown•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•2011

D artmoor is one of the oldest B ritish prisons still in use. Opened in 1809, it quickly gained a brutal reputation that its later history has done little to dispel. The image of D artmoor has loomed large in E ngland's penal and cultural past and endures because of its combination of particular architecture, topography and inmate population as well as its unique capacity to invoke, within the public consciousness, an idealised and even mythical …

  • A Woman's Place

    Alana Barton•ARTICLE•Family & Community History•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article will explore 'maternalistic' forms of governance in a 19th century female reformatory. The ideological foundations and operational practices of the reformatory movement have predominantly been analysed within a theoretical framework that prioritises their paternalistic construction. Yet overwhelmingly it was female matrons who took daily custody of these institutions. I argue here that an examination of this female presence disrupts …

    Alana Barton•BOOK•FRAGILE MORALITIES AND DANGEROUS…•2004

  • Women and Community Punishment

    Open Access•Alana Barton•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•2004

Semi‐penal institutions (for example reformatories, asylums and refuges) were originally developed during the late 18th and early 19th Century, their primary aim being to reform ‘deviant’ women back to acceptable and appropriate standards of femininity. This article will argue that many of the significant features of the early semi‐penal institutions can be found in contemporary institutions for women, specifically probation hostels. This article…
