This report assesses sociodemographic correlates of cannabis routes of administration (ROAs) among adolescents in 2017, one year prior to legalization of cannabis in Canada. We analyze a subsample of 809 students (Grades 9–12) from the Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey (OSDUHS) who used cannabis in the previous year. Pipes/bongs/waterpipes (81.8%) are the most prevalent ROA, followed by joints (73.8%) and edibles (42%). Approximately 70%…

Sex differences in the relationships between childhood adversity, attachment anxiety and current smoking
Background: Smoking behavior and smoking cessation are complex. Interpersonal factors such as childhood adversity are associated with smoking, especially in women. Identifying how and in whom these individual factors contribute to smoking behavior may support individualized smoking cessation strategies. Attachment insecurity (attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety) involves biological and psychological processes in close relationships and is…
Gender Differences in Alcohol Use and Risk Drinking in Ontario Ethnic Groups
This article examines prevalence and gender differences of alcohol use and risk drinking in a representative sample of Ontario adults. Data were drawn from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Monitor survey of Ontario adults aged 18 and older collected between January 2005 and December 2010. The prevalence of self-reported lifetime, current, and high-risk drinking were all higher among the Canadian and the European-origin groups com…

Data were taken from the 2000–2006 CAMH Monitor (N = 15,653) general population survey of Ontario adults. Scoring 4+ on the 12-item General Health Questionnaire defined probable AMD, as suggested by recent research. Logistic regression showed that respondents with alcohol problems had significantly increased odds of probable AMD, but th…

The Effects of Privatization of Alcohol Sales in Alberta on Suicide Mortality Rates
We examine the impact of privatization of retail sale of alcohol in Alberta, Canada, between 1985 and 1995 on mortality rates from suicide. Privatization took place in three stages: The opening of privately owned wine stores in 1985, the opening of privately owned cold beer stores and the selling of spirits and wine in hotels in the rural area in 1989–90, and finally privatization of all liquor stores in 1994. Interrupted time series analysis wit…

The Antisocial Behaviour and the Automobile project focuses on auto theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, and road rage/driver ag…

Distinguishing causes and correlates of drinking and driving
The overall framework for this review For many social problems it is extremely difficult to determine cause-effect relationships with any degree of certainty. Drinking and driving is one such social problem where causes are difficult to delineate. A major distinction exists between causes and correlates of driving while impaired (DWI). For a correlation,* only one condition needs to be satisfied-i.e., there is a relationship between the variable …

Can We Prevent Road Rage
Road rage has become a serious concern in many countries, and preventive efforts are required. This article reviews what can be done to prevent road rage by exploring potential prevention avenues in five areas. First, legal changes aimed at increasing the penalties for road rage behavior could be instituted, drawing on models from aggressive-driving or impaired-driving laws. A second approach would involve the adoption of court programs for convi…
