Vitamin D status and intake of lactating Inuit women living in the Canadian Arctic
Objective To determine the prevalence and correlates of healthy vitamin D status in lactating Inuit women living in remote regions of the Arctic. Design Cross-sectional. Setting Households were selected randomly in thirty-six communities of Nunavut, Nunatsiavut and Inuvialuit Settlement Region. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24 h recall and an FFQ. Anthropometric measurements, household living conditions, supplement use and health status wer…
Changes in eating behavior and plasma leptin in children with obesity participating in a family-centered lifestyle intervention
The goal of childhood obesity lifestyle interventions are to positively change body composition, however it is unknown if interventions also modulate factors that are related to energy intake. This study aimed to examine changes in eating behaviors and plasma leptin concentrations in overweight and obese children participating in a 1-year family-centered lifestyle intervention. Interventions were based on Canadian diet and physical activity (PA) …

Red blood cell folate levels in Canadian Inuit women of childbearing years
While mean levels of folate reached target levels, this was largely driven by the small number of women taking vitamin supplements. Our results suggest that folate status is often too low in Inuit women of childbearing years. Initiatives to improve food security, culturally relevant education on folate-rich traditional foods, vitamin supplements, and smoking cessation/reduction programs may benefit Inuit women and improve birth outcomes
Vitamin D status in mothers with pre-eclampsia and their infants
Objective The objective of the present study was to determine if vitamin D intake and status are associated with pre-eclampsia in a country without a vitamin D fortification policy. Design A case–control study of pregnancies with (case) and without (control) pre-eclampsia was conducted from January to April when UVB is minimal. Maternal and cord blood obtained at delivery were measured for plasma 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D 3 ), 3-epimer o…
Validity of an FFQ assessing the vitamin D intake of young Serbian women living in a region without food fortification
Objective The objective of the present study was to examine the external validity of an FFQ designed to estimate dietary vitamin D intake compared with a plasma biomarker and three repeated 24 h dietary recalls in women of reproductive age in Serbia, where there is no exposure to food fortified with vitamin D. The method of triads was applied. Design In a cross-sectional study, 422 women completed the Women and Reproductive Health FFQ (WRH-FFQ) d…
Prevalence of unexplained anaemia in Inuit men and Inuit post-menopausal women in Northern Labrador
Determinants of vitamin D status in pregnant women and neonates
A family-centered lifestyle intervention for obese six- to eight-year-old children
A family-centered lifestyle intervention to improve body composition and bone mass in overweight and obese children 6 through 8 years
ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01290016
Higher n3-fatty acid status is associated with lower risk of iron depletion among food insecure Canadian Inuit women
Iron depletion and anemia are a concern for Inuit women despite adequate total dietary iron intake primarily from heme sources. The high prevalence of H. pylori exposure, together with dietary iron adequacy, suggests an inflammation-driven iron deficiency and mild anemia. The anti-inflammatory properties of LC-PUFA may be important for iron status in this population
Low prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia among Inuit preschool children
Objective To report the prevalence rates and correlates for anaemia, iron deficiency (ID) and iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) among Inuit preschool-aged children. Design A cross-sectional study assessed iron intake, demographic information, medical history, anthropometrics, Hb, ferritin, C-reactive protein and antibodies to Helicobacter pylori . Setting Sixteen selected Inuit communities in Nunavut Territory, Canada. Subjects Inuit ( n 388) aged 3–…
Cortisol reactivity and regulation associated with shame responding in early childhood
The purpose of this study was to characterize cortisol response and regulation associated with shame responding in early childhood and to examine how general the relation between shame and cortisol is. It was predicted that children responding to task failure with shame would show a larger and more prolonged cortisol response than other children. Participants were 214 children (124 boys, 90 girls) ranging from 3.7 to 4.5 years of age (M = 4.14 ye…
