Predictors of reported alcohol intake during the first and second waves of the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada among middle-aged and older adults
Factors predictive of potentially worrisome alcohol use (i.e. increased intake, binge drinking) included younger age, sex, greater education and income, living alone, cannabis use, and worse mental health. Some of these factors were also associated with decreased intake, but the magnitudes of associations were smaller. This information may help direct screening efforts and interventions towards individuals at risk for problematic alcohol intake d…
Gender, marital and educational inequalities in mid- to late-life depressive symptoms
Background Although ageing populations are increasingly residing in cities, it is unknown whether depression inequalities are moderated by urbanicity degree. We estimated gender, marital and educational inequalities in depressive symptoms among older European and Canadian adults, and examined whether higher levels of urbanicity, captured by population density, heightened these inequalities. Methods Harmonised cross-sectional data on 97 826 adults…
Functional disability and social participation restriction associated with chronic conditions in middle-aged and older adults
BACKGROUND: We examine the population impact on functional disability and social participation of physical and mental chronic conditions individually and in combination. METHODS: Cross-sectional, population-based data from community-dwelling people aged 45 years and over living in the 10 Canadian provinces in 2008-2009 were used to estimate the population attributable risk (PAR) for functional disability in basic (ADL) and instrumental (IADL) act…
Prenatal arsenic exposure and drowning among children in Bangladesh
There is increasing concern regarding adverse effects of prenatal arsenic exposure on the neurodevelopment of children. We analyzed mortality data for children, who were born to 11,414 pregnant women between 2002 and 2004, with an average age of 5 years of follow-up. Individual drinking-water arsenic exposure during pregnancy was calculated using tubewell water arsenic concentration between last menstrual period and date of birth. There were 84 d…
A prospective cohort study of stroke mortality and arsenic in drinking water in Bangladeshi adults
The result suggests that arsenic exposure was associated with increased stroke mortality risk in this population, and was more significant in women compared to men

Distance decay in delivery care utilisation associated with neonatal mortality. A case referent study in northern Vietnam
Distance to the closest health facility was negatively associated with neonatal mortality risk. Health care utilisation in the prenatal period could partly explain this risk elevation since there was a distance decay in health system usage prior to and at delivery. The geographical dimension must be taken into consideration when planning interventions for improved neonatal survival, especially when targeting socio-economically disadvantaged group…
Prevalence of arsenic exposure and skin lesions. A population based survey in Matlab, Bangladesh
Study objective: To assess prevalence of arsenic exposure through drinking water and skin lesions, and their variation by geographical area, age, sex, and socioeconomic conditions. Design, setting, and participants: Skin lesion cases were identified by screening the entire population above 4 years of age (n = 166 934) living in Matlab, a rural area in Bangladesh, during January 2002 and August 2003. The process of case identification involved ini…
