  • The Great Mobility Puzzle Resolved

    Marie Connolly, Catherine Haeck•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2026•References: 6

Open Access•Sylvana M Côté, Catherine Haeck et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Education /…•2024

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to (a) assess the associations between early behavioral problems and intergenerational income mobility (i.e., the degree to which income status is transmitted from one generation to the next), (b) verify whether these associations are moderated by child sex, and (c) explore indirect effects of early behavioral problems on income mobility via high school graduation. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Qu…

  • Child Penalties in Canada

Marie Connolly, Marie Mélanie Fontaine et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 9

  • Nonlinear Class Size Effects on Cognitive and Noncognitive Development of Young Children

Marie Connolly, Catherine Haeck•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2022

We estimate the nonlinear impact of class size on student achievement by exploiting regulations that cap class size at 20 students per class in kindergarten. Based on student-level information from a previously unexploited and unique large-scale census survey of kindergarten students, this study provides clear evidence of the nonlinearity of class size effects on development measures. While the effects are largest on cognitive development, class …

  • Understanding and attenuating pandemic-related disruptions

    Open Access•Sylvana M Côté, Marie-Claude Geoffroy et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 21

The Secretary General of the United Nations described the impact of COVID-19-related school closures as a "generational catastrophe." What will be the legacy of the 2020-2021 pandemic-related disruptions in 5, 10, 20 years from now, as regards education and well-being of children and youth? Addressing the disproportionate impact on those growing up in socio-economically disadvantaged areas or on those with pre-existing learning challenges is key …

  • Trends in Cognitive Skill Inequalities by Socio-Economic Status across Canada

    Catherine Haeck, Pierre Lefebvre•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In this article, we document the trends in cognitive skills gaps across Canada. We use Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test scores over seven cycles, from 2000 to 2018, to provide an exhaustive portrait of the trends in the test score distribution over time and the score gaps by parental socio-economic status (SES). We find that the achievement gap between top-performing students (90th percentile) and students facing challen…

  • Pandemic School Closures May Increase Inequality in Test Scores

    Catherine Haeck, Pierre Lefebvre•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2020•Cited by: 14•References: 3

Schools have been closed across the country and will remain closed until September in most provinces. The decision to reopen should take into account current inequalities in cognitive skills across the country and the impact of school interruptions on knowledge accumulation. In this article, we use information from a companion article to estimate the socioeconomic achievement gaps of 15-year-olds across Canada and assess the impact of the pandemi…

  • Paid Parental Leave

Catherine Haeck, Samuel Paré et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This article provides an analysis of the impact of the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) relative to the Canadian parental leave program. Using a quasi-experimental design with survey data, we find that mothers spend on average 10 additional days with their newborn after the implementation of the insurance plan and that both mothers and fathers received higher benefits. Using both survey data and administrative data, we find that the QPIP has…
