  • Role of socioeconomic status in modifying the relationship between alcohol use and injury events

Laura Llamosas-Falcón, Jurgen Rehm et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2026•Referências: 33

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a well-established risk factor for injuries, yet the role of socioeconomic status (SES) in modifying this relationship remains underexplored. This study examines how SES influences the association between alcohol use and injury events, including both fatal and non-fatal injuries as well as the risk of repeated injuries requiring hospitalisation. METHODS: Using data from the UK Biobank, we applied Cox proportiona…

  • Mediating role of psychological distress and alcohol use in socioeconomic disparities in deaths of despair

    Open Access•Aurélie M Lasserre, Yachen Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2026•Citada por: 1•Referências: 35

BACKGROUND: Deaths of despair - suicide, drug overdose and chronic liver disease mortality - are major contributors to premature mortality in the USA, disproportionately affecting individuals with low socioeconomic status (SES). The mechanisms underlying these disparities, particularly the roles of psychological distress and alcohol use, remain insufficiently understood. We assessed associations of SES, alcohol use and psychological distress with…

  • Restrictive and permissive alcohol policies during the Covid-19 pandemic and their association with alcohol consumption in the United States

Open Access•Julia Lemp, Carolin Kilian et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2025

Alcohol policies and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic were linked to both lower and higher alcohol consumption in different population subgroups. Restrictive and permissive policies had diverging associations with consumption patterns across subgroups. While effect sizes were modest, they could translate into meaningful changes in alcohol consumption at the population level, especially during prolonged times of crisis

  • Here to stay? Policy changes in alcohol home delivery and “to‐go” sales during and after Covid ‐19 in the United States

Open Access•Julia Lemp, Carolin Kilian et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2024

During the early phase of the COVID‐19 pandemic, legislative changes that expanded alcohol home delivery and options for “to‐go” alcohol sales were introduced across the United States to provide economic relief to establishments and retailers. Using data from the Alcohol Policy Information System, we examined whether these changes have persisted beyond the peak phase of the COVID‐19 emergency and explored the implications for public health. Illus…

  • Can lifestyle factors explain racial and ethnic inequalities in all-cause mortality among US adults

Open Access•Klajdi Puka, Carolin Kilian et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Lifestyle factors provide some explanation for racial and ethnic inequalities in all-cause mortality. Greater attention to structural, life course, healthcare, and other factors is needed to understand determinants of inequalities in mortality and to advance health equity

  • Educational Attainment and Lifestyle Risk Factors Associated With All-Cause Mortality in the US

Open Access•Klajdi Puka, Christopher Buckley et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2022

In this cohort study, differential exposure to lifestyle risk factors was an important mediator of socioeconomic inequalities in mortality. Public health interventions are needed, particularly among low SES groups, to address smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol use, and the socioenvironmental contexts within which these risk factors develop

  • The role of alcohol use and drinking patterns in socioeconomic inequalities in mortality

Open Access•Charlotte Probst, Carolin Kilian et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Public Health•2020

  • National, regional, and global burdens of disease from 2000 to 2016 attributable to alcohol use

Open Access•Kevin D Shield, Kevin Shield et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Public Health•2020

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use has increased globally, with varying trends in different parts of the world. This study investigates gender, age, and geographical differences in the alcohol-attributable burden of disease from 2000 to 2016. METHODS: This comparative risk assessment study estimated the alcohol-attributable burden of disease. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were estimated by combining alcohol exposure data obtained from production …

  • The Normative Underpinnings of Population-Level Alcohol Use

Open Access•Charlotte Probst, Tuong Manh Vu et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2020

Background. By defining what is “normal,” appropriate, expected, and unacceptable, social norms shape human behavior. However, the individual-level mechanisms through which social norms impact population-level trends in health-relevant behaviors are not well understood. Aims. To test the ability of social norms mechanisms to predict changes in population-level drinking patterns. Method. An individual-level model was developed to simulate dynamic …

  • Meeting the Global NCD Target of at Least 10% Relative Reduction in the Harmful Use of Alcohol

Open Access•Charlotte Probst, Jurgen Manthey et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The findings indicate a divergence in alcohol consumption reduction in Europe, with substantial progress in the Eastern part of the region and very modest or no progress in EU countries

  • The global proportion and volume of unrecorded alcohol in 2015

Open Access•Charlotte Probst, Alexandra Fleischmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2019

BACKGROUND: (APC) consumption among adults which comprises recorded consumption and unrecorded consumption. While recorded consumption can be assessed with small measurement bias via taxation or other governmental records, unrecorded consumption is more difficult to assess. The objectives of this study were to estimate the country-specific proportion and volume of unrecorded APC in 2015, to identify main sources of unrecorded alcohol and to asses…

  • Global Prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Among Children and Youth

Open Access•Shannon Lange, Charlotte Probst et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Pediatrics•2017

Importance: Prevalence estimates are essential to effectively prioritize, plan, and deliver health care to high-needs populations such as children and youth with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). However, most countries do not have population-level prevalence data for FASD. Objective: To obtain prevalence estimates of FASD among children and youth in the general population by country, by World Health Organization (WHO) region, and globally.…

  • Actual and predicted prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Latin America and the Caribbean

Open Access•Svetlana Popova, Shannon Lange et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2017

Objective To estimate the prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy among the general population of Latin America and the Caribbean, by country, in 2012 . Methods Three steps were taken: a comprehensive, systematic literature search; meta-analyses, assuming a random-effects model for countries with published studies; and regression modelling (data prediction) for countries with either no published studies or too few to obtain an estimate…
