Preventable Differences in Recommended Outpatient Covid-19 Treatment Among Adults With Covid-19 in the United States
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed differences in health care outcomes, including the prescription of COVID-19 antiviral medications. This analysis aimed to describe prescribing patterns in outpatient COVID-19 treatment and assess factors that contributed to these differences. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using electronic health record data from August 2022 through March 2024 from health care institutions participating…
The Federal Menu Labeling Law and Twitter Discussions about Calories in the United States
Public awareness of calories in food sold in retail establishments is a primary objective of the menu labeling law. This study explores the extent to which we can use social media and internet search queries to understand whether the federal calorie labeling law increased awareness of calories. To evaluate the association of the federal menu labeling law with tweeting about calories we retrieved tweets that contained the term "calorie(s)" from th…
Comparing shopper characteristics by online grocery ordering use among households in low-income communities in Maine
Objective: Online grocery shopping could improve access to healthy food, but it may not be equally accessible to all populations – especially those at higher risk for food insecurity. The current study aimed to compare the socio-demographic characteristics of families who ordered groceries online v . those who only shopped in-store. Design: We analysed enrollment survey and 44 weeks of individually linked grocery transaction data. We used univari…
Compliance in 2017 With Federal Calorie Labeling in 90 Chain Restaurants and 10 Retail Food Outlets Prior to Required Implementation
Objectives. To examine early compliance with the delayed federal calorie labeling regulation that requires posting calories on menus and menu boards at retail food chains with 20 or more establishments nationally. Methods. We explored implementation of calorie labeling at 90 of the largest US chain restaurants and the 10 highest-grossing supermarket chains from May to December 2017. We contacted corporate offices and at least 2 locations for each…

Effects of Proximity to Supermarkets on a Randomized Trial Studying Interventions for Obesity
Objectives. To determine whether proximity to a supermarket modified the effects of an obesity intervention. Methods. We examined 498 children aged 6 to 12 years with a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile participating in an obesity trial in Massachusetts in 2011 to 2013. The practice-based interventions included computerized clinician decision support plus family self-guided behavior change or health coaching. Outcomes were 1-y…
Calorie Underestimation When Buying High-Calorie Beverages in Fast-Food Contexts
We asked 1877 adults and 1178 adolescents visiting 89 fast-food restaurants in New England in 2010 and 2011 to estimate calories purchased. Calorie underestimation was greater among those purchasing a high-calorie beverage than among those who did not (adults: 324 ±698 vs 102 ±591 calories; adolescents: 360 ±602 vs 198 ±509 calories). This difference remained significant for adults but not adolescents after adjusting for total calories purchased.…
A Traffic-Light Label Intervention and Dietary Choices in College Cafeterias
Objectives. To examine whether traffic-light labeling and choice architecture interventions improved dietary choices among students at a northeastern US university. Methods. In 6 cafeterias at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, we implemented a 7-week intervention including traffic-light labeling (red: least nutrient rich; yellow: nutrient neutral; green: most nutrient rich), choice architecture (how choices are presented to consume…

Point-of-Purchase Price and Education Intervention to Reduce Consumption of Sugary Soft Drinks
Objectives. We investigated whether a price increase on regular (sugary) soft drinks and an educational intervention would reduce their sales. Methods. We implemented a 5-phase intervention at the Brigham and Women's Hospital cafeteria in Boston, Massachusetts. After posting existing prices of regular and diet soft drinks and water during baseline, we imposed several interventions in series: a price increase of 35% on regular soft drinks, a rever…
Psychosocial Stress and Change in Weight Among US Adults
The association of psychosocial stress with weight gain may have important implications for clinical practice and workplace and public health interventions. To determine whether multiple domains of psychosocial stress were associated with weight gain from 1995 to 2004, the authors analyzed a nationally representative longitudinal cohort of 1,355 men and women in the United States. Change in body mass index was assessed for multiple domains of psy…
Protocol for an experimental investigation of the roles of oxytocin and social support in neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and subjective responses to stress across age and gender
Understanding the determinants of healthy aging is a major public health priority and identifying effective measures to prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases is an important goal. Experimental research on oxytocin, social relationships, and health in adulthood will contribute to the scientific knowledge base for maximizing active life and health expectancy. At conclusion of the study we will have solid evidence concerning the effects of …
