  • What determines the success of AI voice-cloned speech? Prosodic and acoustic evidence on three TTS systems

Open Access•Linda Bakkouche, Xinbing Luo et al.•ARTICLE•Phonetica•2026

Artificial intelligence (AI) voice cloning systems have advanced rapidly, enabling applications in education and assistive technologies. Yet listeners’ perceptual ratings of naturalness and similarity remain inconsistent: some systems approach human-like quality, while others sound noticeably artificial. Here we present a comprehensive prosodic and computational analysis of voice-cloned speech across three voice-cloning systems (ElevenLabs, Style…

  • Measuring the intangible resources caregivers need to provide nurturing care during the complementary feeding period

Open Access•Stephanie L Martin, Amanda Zongrone et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2024

Objective: Caregivers require tangible (e.g. food and financial) and intangible resources to provide care to ensure child health, nutrition and development. Intangible resources include beliefs and knowledge, education, self-efficacy, perceived physical health, mental health, healthy stress levels, social support, empowerment, equitable gender attitudes, safety and security and time sufficiency. These intangible caregiver resources are included a…

  • Assessing the implementation of evidence-based alcohol policies on Atlantic Canadian post-secondary campuses

Open Access•Kara Thompson, Stephanie Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2024•References: 40

Atlantic Canadian universities are collectively achieving less than half their potential to reduce student alcohol-related harm. However, this study identifies opportunities where policies can be enhanced or modified. The fact that most policies are present at one or more campuses highlights that policy recommendations are an achievable goal for campuses. Campuses are encouraged to look to each other as models for improving their own policies

  • Cheers

Kara Thompson, Darien DeWolf et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2023

Background: Alcohol marketing is a known risk factor for youth drinking. The growth in digital marketing has generated a new form of alcohol advertisement in which brands solicit and/or share consumer-generated or user-generated content. Objectives: The current study investigates the prevalence of UGC alcohol advertising on social media and examines the content of UGC advertising to determine potential violations of current regulatory guidelines.…

  • Taking No for an Answer—Refusal of Life-Sustaining Treatment

    Open Access•Stephanie Cooper•ARTICLE•The AMA Journal of Ethic•2010

Case Dr. Sachem, an emergency physician at a regional burns center, had kept the waiting room relatively empty for most of Memorial Day weekend, despite the recent warm weather. At 3:00 AM on Monday, a patch came over the radio. Injured firefighters from a two-alarm house fire were being brought in by ambulance. Five minutes later, the trauma bay was enveloped with the acidic smell of soot and burnt flesh

  • The impact of economic recession on maternal and infant mortality

Open Access•Tim Ensor, Stephanie Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The data presented suggest that recessions do have a negative association with maternal and infant outcomes particularly in earlier stages of a country's development although the effects vary widely across different systems. Almost all of the 20 least wealthy countries have suffered a reduction of 10% or more in GDP per capita in at least one of the last five decades. The challenge for today's policy makers is the design and implementation of mec…

  • A Pilot Study of Dental Students' Esthetic Perceptions of Computer‐generated Mild Dental Fluorosis Compared to Other Conditions

Open Access•Carrie B McKnight, Steven M Levy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1999

This approach allows fluorosis to be better compared with other oral conditions because the images are standardized. Additional research with this method is warranted, including more variations in conditions, more comparisons, and other study populations
