  • Emergency Department Visits for Suspected Suicide Attempts Among Persons Aged 12–25 Years Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic — United States, January 2019–May 2021

Open Access•Ellen Yard, Lakshmi Radhakrishnan et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2021

during January 1, 2019-May 15, 2021, among persons aged 12-25 years, by sex, and at three distinct phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with the corresponding period in 2019, persons aged 12-25 years made fewer ED visits for suspected suicide attempts during March 29-April 25, 2020. However, by early May 2020, ED visit counts for suspected suicide attempts began increasing among adolescents aged 12-17 years, especially among girls. During Ju…

  • Societal determinants of violent death

Open Access•Natalie Wilkins, Xinjian Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2019

In this ecological study, we attempt to quantify the extent to which differences in homicide and suicide death rates between three countries, and among states/provinces within those countries, may be explained by differences in their social, economic, and structural characteristics. We examine the relationship between state/province level measures of societal risk factors and state/province level rates of violent death (homicide and suicide) acro…

  • The Epidemiology of Unintentional and Violence-Related Injury Morbidity and Mortality among Children and Adolescents in the United States

Open Access•Michael F Ballesteros, Michael Ballesteros et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Injuries and violence among young people have a substantial emotional, physical, and economic toll on society. Understanding the epidemiology of this public health problem can guide prevention efforts, help identify and reduce risk factors, and promote protective factors. We examined fatal and nonfatal unintentional injuries, injuries intentionally inflicted by other (i.e., assaults and homicides) among children ages 0-19, and intentionally self-…

  • A Comprehensive Approach to Motorcycle-Related Head Injury Prevention

Open Access•Greig Craft, Truong Van Bui et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Motorcyclists account for 23% of global road traffic deaths and over half of fatalities in countries where motorcycles are the dominant means of transport. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 69% and death by 42%; however, both child and adult helmet use are low in many countries where motorcycles are a primary mode of transportation. In response to the need to increase helmet use by all drivers and their passengers,…

  • Trends in the leading causes of injury mortality, Australia, Canada and the United States, 2000–2014

Open Access•Karin A Mack, Angela Clapperton et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

Results show marked differences and striking similarities in injury mortality between the countries and within countries over time. The observed trends differed by injury cause category. The substantial differences in injury rates between similarly resourced populations raises important questions about the role of societal-level factors as underlying causes of the differential distribution of injury in our communities

  • Increasing smoke alarm operability through theory-based health education

Ted R Miller, Gwen Bergen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 16

BACKGROUND: Although working smoke alarms halve deaths in residential fires, many households do not keep alarms operational. We tested whether theory-based education increases alarm operability. METHODS: Randomised multiarm trial, with a single arm randomly selected for use each day, in low-income neighbourhoods in Maryland, USA. Intervention arms: (1) Full Education combining a health belief module with a social-cognitive theory module that prov…

  • Injury Prevention Counseling for Adults

Ann M Dellinger, Jieru Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2009

Injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Physicians are a trusted source that can disseminate information about the prevention of injury and violence. This study used the second Injury Control and Risk Survey to report the national prevalence of healthcare provider injury prevention counseling to adults. Results indicate that overall 1 in 5 adults who visited a healthcare provider received some counseling on i…

  • Autopsy Study of Motorcyclist Fatalities

Kimberly M Auman, Joseph A Kufera et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2002•Referencias: 21

Objectives. This study sought to determine the impact of Maryland’s all-rider motorcycle helmet law (enacted on October 1, 1992) on preventing deaths and traumatic brain injuries among motorcyclists. Methods. Statewide motorcyclist fatalities occurring during seasonally comparable 33-month periods immediately preceding and following enactment of the law were compared. Results. The motorcyclist fatality rate dropped from 10.3 per 10 000 registered…
