Case Study Qualitative Inquiry of Healthy Food Retailing in Rural Newfoundland and Labrador
Multilevel, multicomponent interventions are recognized approaches to promote public health and prevent disease. Our study focused on diet and its determinants to understand factors impacting healthy food retailing in rural Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada, using a case study approach with community-engaged system-based processes. In three case study communities, we conducted two qualitative data generating processes (storeowner interviews …
Case management for individuals with complex care needs
Introduction: Case management (CM) is an effective integrated model of care for patients with chronic conditions and complex care needs, given the focus on improving patient engagement in healthcare and improving self-management skills. While CM often leads to positive outcomes, little is known about the factors which promote or hinder implementation. Objective: This study seeks to examine factors which facilitated and hindered the implementation…
Strategies used throughout the scaling-up process of eConsult – Multiple case study of four Canadian Provinces
BACKGROUND: eConsult is a model of asynchronous communication connecting primary care providers to specialists to discuss patient care. This study aims to analyze the scaling-up process and identify strategies used to support scaling-up efforts in four provinces in Canada. METHODS: We conducted a multiple case study with four cases (ON, QC, MB, NL). Data collection methods included document review (n = 93), meeting observations (n = 65) and semi-…
Patient engagement in health implementation research
INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence supports patient engagement (PE) in health implementation research to improve the quality, relevance and uptake of research. However, more guidance is needed to plan and operationalize PE before and throughout the research process. The aim of the study was to develop a logic model illustrating the causal links between context, resources, activities, outcomes and impact of PE in an implementation research programme. …
Patient and researcher experiences of patient engagement in primary care health care research
BACKGROUND: Studies have highlighted common challenges and barriers to patient engagement in research, but most were based on patient partners' or academic researchers' experiences. A better understanding of how both groups differentially experience their partnership could help identify strategies to improve collaboration in patient engagement research. AIM: This study aimed to describe and compare patient partners' and academic researchers' expe…
Sociodemographics and their impacts on risk factor awareness and beliefs about cancer and screening
Among adults in NL, there was poor awareness that low-fiber diets, alcohol, and age are risk factors for cancer. Lower income and education, rural residence, and not having a health care provider were associated with lower risk factor awareness. We also found a few associations between sociodemographic factors and beliefs about cancer treatment and outcomes or screening. We stress that while addressing awareness is necessary, so too is improving …
The influence of gender and other patient characteristics on health care-seeking behaviour
BACKGROUND: Canadians' health care-seeking behaviour for physical and mental health issues was examined using the international Quality and Cost of Primary Care (QUALICOPC) survey that was conducted in 2013 in Canada. METHOD: This study used the cross-sectional Patient Experiences Survey collected from 7260 patients in 759 practices across 10 Canadian provinces as part of the QUALICOPC study. A Responsive Care Scale (RCS) was constructed to refle…
