  • Dietary diversity and associated factors among infants and young children in three West African countries

Open Access•Amynah Janmohamed, Melissa M Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Providing children healthy diversified diets is important for their optimal growth and development. The high prevalence of under-nourishment during the critical early life period is of serious concern in West Africa. We assessed the level of dietary diversity and associated factors for children aged 6–23 months in Côte d’Ivoire, Niger and Senegal. Prior 24 h dietary intake was assessed for 3,528 children (Côte d’Ivoire: N = 118; Niger: N = 763; S…

  • Feasibility of delivering vitamin A supplementation (VAS) and deworming through routine community health services in Siaya County, Kenya

Open Access•Sophie Ochola, Asa Lelei et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2024

Vitamin A deficiency and soil-transmitted helminth infection are serious public health problems in Kenya. The coverage of vitamin A supplementation and deworming medication (VASD) provided through mass campaigns is generally high, yet with a cost that is not sustainable, while coverage offered through routine health services is low. Alternative strategies are needed that achieve the recommended coverage of >80% of children twice annually and can …

  • Vitamin A supplementation coverage and associated factors for children aged 6 to 59 months in integrated and campaign-based delivery systems in four sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Amynah Janmohamed, David Doledec et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Our findings indicate routine delivery approaches for VAS are not achieving the level of coverage needed for public health impact in these settings. Intensive outreach efforts contributed to the higher coverage in Sierra Leone and highlight the importance of reducing the burdens associated with seeking supplementation at health facilities. As countries move towards incorporating VAS into routine health services, the essentiality of informed commu…

  • Covid-19 concerns among caregivers and vitamin A supplementation coverage among children aged 6–59 months in four countries in Western sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Melissa M Baker, Amynah Janmohamed et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objective: To assess child vitamin A supplementation (VAS) coverage in 2019 and 2020 and explore key factors, including COVID-19 concerns, that influenced VAS status in four sub-Saharan African countries. Design: Data from eight representative household surveys were used to assess VAS coverage. Multivariable logistic regression models examined the effect of rural/urban residence, child sex and age, caregiver education, COVID-19 concern and househ…

  • Prevalence of Positive Mental Health and Associated Factors Among Postpartum Women in Canada

Open Access•Mélanie Varin, Elia Palladino et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2020

Our study demonstrated that availability of maternal support, self-rated physical health and absence of symptoms of PPD or GAD were associated with PMH among postpartum women. As physical health had the strongest association with mental health, we encourage further examination of this relationship

  • Symptoms of postpartum anxiety and depression among women in Canada

Open Access•Mihaela Gheorghe, Mélanie Varin et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This study highlights that a history of depression and good, fair, or poor physical health are associated with an increased odds of symptoms consistent with PPA and PPD, while other maternal support and sense of community belonging are associated with a decreased odds of these conditions
