  • Mediating pathways between area-level deprivation and hypertension in Nepal

Open Access•Ishor Sharma, M Karen Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Hypertension is a major contributor to global disease burden, and the prevalence is associated to various social determinants, including area-level deprivation. However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study explores how household food insecurity, individual behaviors (smoking and alcohol use), and nutritional status may mediate the relationship between area…

Regardless of the residential setting, age, marital status, education, occupation, wealth, and year were associated with higher risk of overweight/obes…

M Karen Campbell, William R Avison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are at higher risk for morbidity. This analysis explored whether increased risk is attributable to SGA or its causes. Methods A population-based cohort (n=2357) was recruited at 10–22 weeks gestation. We collected prenatal data by questionnaire, perinatal data from hospital records, and follow-up data by telephone survey 2–4 years later. Outcomes included neonatal admission to special care…

  • Socioeconomic status and non-fatal injuries among Canadian adolescents

    Open Access•Beth K Potter, Kathy N Speechley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2005

The results suggest that differences related to the measures of SES chosen and the causes of injury under study may both contribute to discrepancies in past research on SES and non-fatal injuries among adolescents. To clarify the potential SES-injury relationship among youth, the findings emphasize a need for a greater understanding of the meaning and relevance of different SES measures for adolescents, and for an exploration of the pathways thro…
