The Christology of the Church of the East
After setting out the background of the early history of the Church of the East, this contribution focuses on the Syriac sources of the fifth to seventh centuries which are witnesses to the development of the 'two-nature' Christology of the Church of the East, situated outside the Roman Empire during this formative period. Special attention is paid to the ambiguous term qnoma, which is used to render hypostasis in the Chalcedonian Definition, but…
Biblical Exegesis in the Syriac Churches
This chapter surveys the Syriac biblical texts available to Syriac authors and readers, drawing attention to certain basic assumptions. Then the exegetical approaches of each of three main literary genres, commentaries, homilies, and poetry and liturgy, are set out. In the section on liturgy and poetry, particular attention is paid to the following topics: Ephrem’s understanding of the role of symbols, certain titles of biblical origin given to C…

The Chronological Development of Adjectives in –aya up to 725
Whereas early Syriac writers make only a restricted use of adjectives in -aya, in seventh-century authors large numbers are to be found. The present contribution aims to chart this development by providing an alphabetical listing of these forms and their attestation both in Syriac authors and in translations from Greek

Clavis to the Metrical Homilies of Narsai
Narsai (died approximately 500) is a foundational East Syriac theologian and exegete and among the most important and influential Syriac authors more broadly. The present volume serves as a clavis to the more than eighty metrical homilies (memre) attributed to him. The first part consists of the clavis itself: It is organized by homily providing for each a number, a short title, the incipit, the manuscript attestation, previous editions and trans…

Françoise Briquel-Chatonnet & Muriel Debié, Le monde syriaque. Sur les routes d’un christianisme ignoré
At a time when a considerable amount of the material heritage of the Middle Eastern Churches of Syriac tradition has been, and is still being, destroyed in the turmoil of current strife in Syria and Iraq, this is a most opportune book, for it provides an excellent overview of the Syriac Christian tradition, generously accompanied by helpful maps and well-chosen illustrations (mostly inset with the text) at least some of which are of artefacts now…
Animals and Humans: Some Perspectives from an Eastern Christian Tradition
The article looks at the relationship of human beings to animals as seen from the Syriac Christian tradition. In the absence of any detailed discussion of the topic among Syriac authors, the focus of attention is on the general approach of two influential writers, the poet-theologian Ephrem (died AD 373) and the monastic author Isaac the Syrian (7th century), as illustrated above all by their interpretation of the two parts of Gen. 1:26 and the r…
A half century of Syriac studies
In 1964, when Anthony Bryer and I both started teaching at Birmingham University, Syriac studies were generally considered to be little more than an appendage to Biblical Studies, and any idea of a journal or a conference specifically focused on them was unthinkable. Fifty years later the situation has changed dramatically for the better, although the number of universities (at least in Britain) where Syriac is taught has lamentably decreased
Gorgias Concise Syriac-English, English-Syriac Dictionary
As the first two-way Syriac-English/English-Syriac dictionary, the Concise Dictionary is both a convenient academic resource and a door into the world of Modern Literary Syriac. With 13,000 entries drawn from the major existing works, the Syriac-English section is a practical tool for all but the most specialized Classical Syriac texts, while the English-Syriac entries open up new opportunities for scholars to compose their own texts and to parti…

Two Early Lives of Severos, Patriarch of Antioch
Severos, patriarch of Antioch, was one of the most important ecclesiastical figures of the first half of the sixth century, a time when the reception, or not, of the Council of Chalcedon (451) was still a matter of much dispute. As an opponent of the Council, Severos had to flee from his patriarchal see to Egypt in 518 when Justin came to the throne and imperial policy changed. Summoned by Justinian to Constantinople in 536, he won over Anthimos,…
The Chronicle of Pseudo-Zachariah Rhetor: Church and War in Late Antiquity
The Chronicle attributed to Zachariah of Mytilene is one of the most important sources for the history of the church from the Council of Chalcedon in 451 to the early years of the reign of Justinian (527-565). The author who compiled the work in Syriac in A.D. 568/9 drew extensively on the Ecclesiastical History of Zachariah the Rhetor, who later became bishop of Mytilene and ended up giving his name to the whole work. But Zachariah’s Ecclesiasti…

Bride of Light: Hymns on Mary from the Syriac Churches
Syriac is particularly rich in poetry on Mary. Not only is some of this of great tenderness and beauty, but much is also highly imaginative. The present selection of translations includes lyric poems (several by St Ephrem), five lively dialogues, and a longer narrative poem on Mary and Joseph
Two millennia of Christianity in Iraq
Christianity in Iraq goes back to the very early centuries of Christianity; by the second quarter of the fourth century, the date of the earliest surviving major Syriac author writing in this area, it was clearly already a widespread and firmly established presence. Throughout the ensuing centuries and right up to the present time, it has continually played an important part in the wider society of the region. The present article focuses on certa…

The Bible in the Syriac Tradition (English Version)
This is a basic introduction to the various Syriac translations of the Bible and the ways in which they were used in the Syriac tradition. After an initial discussion of the general problems of biblical translation, the different surviving Syriac translations are outlined, as well as biblical manuscripts, lectionaires, printed editions, and translations. A reception history of the Syriac Bible covers the ways in which it has been interpreted, the…

A Palestinian Targum Feature in Syriac
