Increasing Childhood Trauma in Canada
Community Mental Health Services' Clients with Child Welfare Status
An examination of two samples of children seen one year apart at a community mental health service indicated that a significant proportion had also been involved with the child welfare system (44% of the 119-member older sample and 32% of the 160 individuals from the current sample). A reanalysis of the latter sample one year later showed that the caseload overlap had increased to 39
Emotional Disturbance in Fifty Children in the Care of the Child Welfare System
Fifty Canadian children in out-of-home placements under the jurisdiction of a child welfare district office were administered a battery of psychological assessment instruments. The purpose was to obtain an estimate of the proportion showing psychopathology. The child's social worker's opinion on the presence or absence of psychopathology and need for mental health services was also determined. The results showed that 72% of thc children were rate…
Born to Play Ball” The Relative Age Effect and Major League Baseball
The records of 837 major league baseball players were examined in order to determine whether the Little League age eligibility criterion, based on the month of birth, affected participation rate at the professional level. The results indicated that major league players were more likely to have been born in the first months of the year, if that year corresponded to the one used for eligibility for Little League baseball (i.e., beginning in August …
Random Responding and the Questionnaire Measurement of Psychoticism
The hypothesis was advanced that questionnaire measures of Psychoticism (P) may represent an estimate of randomness in responding, rather than reflecting reactions to item content. Questionnaire measures of P, Extraversion, Neuroticism, and a Lie score were taken from each of 103 male subjects. The results showed that P did not correlate with measures of random responding which were derived from the remaining scales. Thus, the hypothesis was not …
Influence of Social Desirability upon the Group Personality Projective Test
The probability of endorsing each multiple-choice item alternative of the Group Personality Projective Test was correlated with the probability of endorsing the alternative as the most socially desirable. The results indicate that about 53% of the measured variance of the test can be attributed to the influence of social desirability. A possible reason for the finding that social desirability has less influence on the test than has been demonstra…
