  • Framing decriminalization

Open Access•Farihah Ali, Shannon Chellew Paternostro et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

These findings highlight critical gaps in government communication and the dominance of misrepresentative media framing in shaping public attitudes. Effective drug policy requires not only legislative change but also proactive, coordinated, and sustained public education strategies to counter misinformation, reduce stigma, and build lasting support

  • Responding to an evolving crisis

  • The decriminalization of illicit drugs in British Columbia

Open Access•Cayley Russell, Farihah Ali et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This evaluation will draw on implementation science research practices to evaluate and understand the full impacts of this novel drug policy experiment. Results will be widely disseminated through manuscripts, reports, presentations, and infographics, which will be adapted and tailored for specific audiences. • It’s just a perfect storm”

    Open Access•Annie Foreman-Mackey, Jessica Xavier et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The findings from this study illustrate the complex contextual factors that shape overdose risk and highlight the importance of ensuring that the needs of people who use substances are addressed in future public health emergency responses

  • Concurrent use of opioids and stimulants and risk of fatal overdose

Open Access•Heather Palis, Chloé G Xavier et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

There is an urgent need to prioritize the service needs of people who use stimulants to reduce overdose mortality in British Columbia. Findings have relevance more broadly in other North American settings, where similar trends in opioid and stimulant polysubstance use have been observed

  • Investigating opioid preference to inform safe supply services

Open Access•Max Ferguson, Amrit Parmar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2022

Opioid preference differs by age, geographic area, and Indigenous identity. To create effective safe supply programs, we need to engage PWUD about their drugs of choice

  • Correlates of concurrent use of stimulants and opioids among people who access harm reduction services in British Columbia, Canada

Open Access•Christine D Lukac, Abigail Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2022

Individuals who used stimulants and opioids concurrently tend to be younger, without paid work or housing. They were engaged in harm reduction and treatment services, yet used illicit drugs with unknown concentration daily. Improving access to age-appropriate services and expanding the availability of both legal and regulated stimulants and opioids may further reduce harms of concurrent use

  • Hydromorphone Compared With Diacetylmorphine for Long-term Opioid Dependence

    Eugenia Oviedo‐Joekes, Eugenia Oviedo-Joekes et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Psychiatry•2016

    clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT01447212.

  • Predictors of treatment allocation guesses in a randomized controlled trial testing double-blind injectable hydromorphone and diacetylmorphine for severe opioid use disorder

    Eugenia Oviedo‐Joekes, Kirsten Marchand et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2016

Background: SALOME (Study to Assess Longer-term Opioid Medication Effectiveness) tested in a double-blind non-inferiority clinical trial if hydromorphone could be as effective as diacetylmorphine for severe opioid use disorder. Although participants did not guess treatment correctly beyond what is expected by chance, perceived treatment assignment could affect patients’ response to treatment. This study tested if treatment allocation guess is ass…
