Child care participation among Indigenous children in Canada
The release of a Canadian Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework highlights the importance of recent, Indigenous-specific information to describe the landscape of child care among Indigenous children in Canada; however, there has been a gap in identity-specific, national data on child care for Indigenous children. The purpose of the current study was to address data gaps on participation in child care for First Nations children living…

Changes in Caregiver Health in the Years Surrounding the Birth of a Child With Health Problems
BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with health problems (CHPs; usually mothers) experience more physical and psychological health problems than those of children without health problems (non-CHPs). Primarily cross-sectional and survey-driven, this literature has not yet explored whether these health differences existed before the birth of the CHPs, or are exacerbated postbirth. METHODS: Using linked administrative health data on all mother-child …
Change in Depression Symptoms Through Emerging Adulthood
Existing research suggests there may be important association between mental health and the employment that emerging adults obtain during the transition into the workforce. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to examine the trajectories of emerging adults’ depression symptoms over a 4-year period, as a function of two characteristics of employment: type of work (i.e., full-time or not) and job satisfaction (i.e., highly satisfied with wor…
The Relationships between School Experiences and Mental Health Outcomes among Off-Reserve First Nations Youth
First Nations youth have been shown to have higher rates of mental health problems compared to non-Aboriginal youth. This study used the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey to examine the relationships between school experiences and mental health outcomes for First Nations youth living off reserve. Mental health outcomes included self-rated mental health, psychological distress, the presence of a mood or anxiety disorder, and suicide ideation. This st…
