SimSmoke simulation models by educational status
We found major differences in the initial levels and rates of decline in smoking prevalence by education, leading to widening health inequities. Further study is warranted on education-related policy impacts and the relationship of electronic nicotine delivery systems and other non-cigarette product use to cigarette use
Effects of a Tai Chi rehabilitation program implemented using a hybrid online and offline mode on oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in patients with coronary heart disease
Background Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in both developed and many developing countries. Exercise training is a fundamental component of cardiac rehabilitation programs for patients with CHD. This study aims to investigate the effects of a Tai Chi rehabilitation program, which is provided through a hybrid online and offline mode, on oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in patients with CHD. Methods A total of …
A learning model for improving in-service teachers’ course completion in Moocs
The use of massive open online courses (MOOCs) for teacher professional development (TDP) has increased in the past decades. This study explored the key factors that influenced teachers’ online course completion as a significant indicator of their success in a TPD MOOC. Six key influencing factors (self-efficacy, interaction with curriculum content and peers, satisfaction, overall course score, and TPACK self-assessment) were identified from the …
Study on Two Typical Progressive Motions in Tai Chi (Bafa Wubu) Promoting Lower Extremity Exercise
This is the first study to demonstrate the biomechanical performance of Bafa Wubu in professional athletes of Tai Chi. Two progressive motions of Bafa Wubu require the lower extremity to be slowly controlled, thereby resulting in a smaller ground reaction force. In addition, the loads of the three joints at the lower extremity all increase in the vertical direction and decrease in the lateral direction, reducing the possibility of lateral injury …
The smoking and vaping model, A user-friendly model for examining the country-specific impact of nicotine Vaping product use
SAVM enables non-modelers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to analyze the potential population health effects of NVP use and public health interventions
Can intellectual property protection promote trade credit financing of high-tech enterprises
Whether the intellectual property protection (IPP) system can improve the financing environment for enterprise innovation is a poorly studied research issue. Taking the Chinese 'three-in-one trial' reform of intellectual property rights (IPRs) as a quasi-natural experiment; we investigate the impact of strengthening IPP on trade credit financing of high-tech enterprises. The results show that strengthening IPP can promote their trade credit by ab…
Comparison of smoking prevalence in Canada before and after nicotine vaping product access using the SimSmoke model
Smoking prevalence in Canada, especially among younger adults, declined more rapidly once NVPs became readily available. The emergence of NVPs into the Canadian marketplace has not slowed the decline in smoking
A Decision-Theoretic Public Health Framework for Heated Tobacco and Nicotine Vaping Products
Markets for nicotine vaping products (NVPs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) have grown as these products became positioned as harm-reduction alternatives to combusted tobacco products. Herein, we present a public health decision-theoretic framework incorporating different patterns of HTP, NVP, and cigarette use to examine their impacts on population health. Our framework demonstrates that, for individuals who would have otherwise smoked, HTP u…
Public health impact of a US menthol cigarette ban on the non-Hispanic black population
A menthol cigarette ban will substantially reduce the smoking-associated health impact on the NHB population, thereby reducing health disparities
US Nicotine Vaping Product SimSmoke Simulation Model
The public health impact of nicotine vaping products (NVPs) is subject to a complex set of uncertain transitions between NVP and cigarette use. Instead, we apply an indirect method to gauge the impact of NVP use on smoking prevalence and smoking-attributable deaths (SADs) using the well-established SimSmoke tobacco control policy simulation model. Upon validating the model before NVPs were more widely used, we project a No-NVP (i.e., in the absen…
Public health impact of a US ban on menthol in cigarettes and cigars
Our findings strongly support the implementation of a ban on menthol in cigarettes and cigars
An Examination of the Variation in Estimates of E-Cigarette Prevalence among U.S. Adults
Introduction : Accurate estimates of e-cigarette use are needed to gauge its impact on public health. We compared the results of online and traditional, large scale surveys and provide additional estimates from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) survey, with the aim of assessing the extent of variation in prevalence estimates. Materials and Methods : We searched the peer-reviewed literature for nationally representative estima…
Impact of nations meeting the MPOWER targets between 2014 and 2016
These findings demonstrate the continuing public health impact of tobacco control policies adopted globally since the FCTC, and highlight the importance of more countries adopting MPOWER policies at the highest level to reduce the global burden of tobacco use
The US SimSmoke tobacco control policy model of smokeless tobacco and cigarette use
Our results indicate that cigarette-oriented policies may be effective in also reducing the use of other tobacco products. However, further information is needed on the effect of tobacco control policies on exclusive and dual SLT use and the role of industry
The Prevalence and Characteristics of E-Cigarette Users in the U.S
Studies have examined the characteristics of individuals who use e-cigarettes, including sociodemographic and smoking characteristics, and the relationship of e-cigarette use to tobacco control policies. While most studies consider a subset of these characteristics with weak measures of regular e-cigarette use, this study uses a large, recent U.S. survey to simultaneously consider the association of each of these factors with different use measur…
