  • A Bayesian shared components modeling approach to develop small area indicators of social determinants of health with measures of uncertainty

Open Access•Todd A Norwood, Clarissa Encisa et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 18

  • Estimating micro area behavioural risk factor prevalence from large population-based surveys

Open Access•Laura Seliske, Todd A Norwood et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

This is among the first studies to apply a full Bayesian model to complex sample survey data to identify micro areas with variation in risk factor prevalence, accounting for spatial correlation and other covariates. Application of micro area analysis techniques helps define areas for public health planning, and may be informative to surveillance and research modeling of relevant chronic disease outcomes

  • Field Validation of Food Service Listings

Open Access•Laura Seliske, William Pickett et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

Many studies examining the food retail environment rely on geographic information system (GIS) databases for location information. The purpose of this study was to validate information provided by two GIS databases, comparing the positional accuracy of food service places within a 1 km circular buffer surrounding 34 schools in Ontario, Canada. A commercial database (InfoCanada) and an online database (Yellow Pages) provided the addresses of food …

  • Identification of the Appropriate Boundary Size to Use When Measuring the Food Retail Environment Surrounding Schools

Open Access•Laura Seliske, William Pickett et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

This study included 6,971 students in grades 9 and 10 (ages 13 to 16 years) from 158 schools who participated in the 2009/2010 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Study. Students provided information on where they typically ate lunch. The number of food retailers was obtained for six road network buffer sizes (500, 750, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 5,000 meters) surrounding schools. Associations between the presence of food retailers near school…

  • Association between the food retail environment surrounding schools and overweight in Canadian youth

Open Access•Laura Seliske, Laura M Seliske et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2009

Introduction There is growing interest in how the physical environment influences obesity. Few studies have considered how the food retail environment surrounding schools influences overweight in students. Objective To determine whether there is a relationship between food retailers surrounding schools and overweight among Canadian youth. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting/methods/subjects The number of food retailers was obtained within a 1 k…

  • Density and type of food retailers surrounding Canadian schools

    Open Access•Laura Seliske, Laura M Seliske et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 3
