Approaching Empedocles through PWL practices
To approach the poem-fragments of Empedocles as a discourse emerging from the drama of living, is to allow their performatively theorized snapshots to return from mere stills to moving images of practice in modulated stages of training. This study will propose two ways of approach: aesthetically, and as a transformative spiritual exercise (asksis). The aesthetic way employs four terms from Adorno's Aesthetic Theory, and the way of spiritual exercis…
Another Kind of Octopus
Philosophy nurtures its actuality from questions, or a call that comes from and leads to a lived risk. This paper embraces that risk in directly responding to nine of the fifteen questions in the Call for Papers for the issue, Philosophy as a Way of Life in a Time of Crisis. Attentive to the idea of PWL, I listened for each question's latent (or manifest) placement from seasoned historical thinkers. From that, I assigned the order of the question…
Toward New Adventures in Philosophy
Preview: /Review: Eli Kramer, Intercultural Modes of Philosophy, Volume One: Principles to Guide Philosophical Community (Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2021), 382 pages./ Eli Kramer has provided us with the first volume of an ambitious trilogy entitled Intercultural Modes of Philosophy. Dust as Archi -writing in Lampedusa's Il Gattopardo
Within Il Gattopardo, dust settles within and upon everything by scintillating and multifarious motes. These trans-immanent layers of “voluptuous immobility” extend from geography, historiography, and are even framed as a cosmology. The purpose of this brief study is to initiate a rereading of the novel by its most sustained thematic thread: dust. This polyhedral phantom structuring, both surface and substrate, would in turn allow experiencing ho…
The Devil Wears Damask
My guiding quest-ion is how to convey, speak of, and prepare apprenticeships in creativity. This study emerges from experiences and reflections on the vocation of teaching courses in philosophy, and from having lived through an apprenticeship in my formative years. In an apprenticeship, one draws upon one's own horizon of entrance, to inhabit an embrasure. The space of an embrasure delimits the problem of form, while the formed and delimited aper…
Who’s, What’s, I Don’t Know
This study is a three-part play of musement on a few details in the potentially infinite landscape of Umberto Eco’s turn to, relations with, and adaptations of Pragmatism. This three-part guess was product of an abandoned first guess-attempt entitled: “Who’s on First(ness)?” The present title ensued naturally, and with some laughter, in recalling and using the play on words and names made famous by Abbott and Costello. Section 1 will mention two …
Josiah Royce on Nietzsche's Couch
Very little has been written on Royce’s reception and mentions of Nietzsche that engage the issues of the early dissemination of Nietzsche’s texts in the United States, Royce’s study and knowledge of the range of Nietzsche’s texts, or the mentions of Nietzsche in Royce’s texts from 1906, and up to the posthumously published article “Nietzsche” (1917). This study is an attempt to remedy this lacuna. Section one will track the dissemination of Niet…
