  • Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life Among Male Patients With Controlled and Uncontrolled Hypertension in Semi Urban India

Open Access•Mansi Patil, Radhika Hedaoo et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2023

The burden of hypertension has been growing over recent decades. In addition to risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease development, data indicates that hypertension may also pose a hazard to the quality of life (QoL) of individuals. Patient reported outcomes such as QoL are often overlooked, with physicians and healthcare professionals not routinely evaluating or customizing treatments according to QoL. In this study we aimed to assess the QoL…

  • A Global Longitudinal Study Examining Social Restrictions Severity on Loneliness, Social Anxiety, and Depression

Open Access•M H Lim, Pamela Qualter et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

We found evidence that easing social restrictions brought about additional burden to people who experienced higher social anxiety symptoms. As country-mandated lockdown and social restrictions eased, people are more likely report higher social anxiety as they readjust into their social environment. Mental health practitioners are likely to see higher levels of social anxiety in vulnerable communities even as social restrictions ease

  • Concordance between Different Criteria for Self-Reported Physical Activity Levels and Risk Factors in People with High Blood Pressure in a Rural District in Bangladesh

Open Access•Amirul Islam, Jahar Bhowmik et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Self-reported assessment of physical activity (PA) is commonly used in public health research. The present study investigated the concordance of self-reported PA assessed using the global physical activity questionnaire (GPAQ) and two different measurement approaches. Participants ( n = 307, aged 30-75 years with hypertension) were recruited from a rural area in Bangladesh. We analyzed the difference between the World Health Organization (WHO) re…

  • Knowledge of and Intention to Participate in Physical Activity Programs and Their Associated Sociodemographic Factors in People with High Blood Pressure in a Rural Area of Bangladesh

Open Access•Amirul Islam, Mohammad Arzan Hosen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This initial investigation aimed to investigate the knowledge of the health benefits of physical activity (PA) and attitudes towards participation in PA. The study recruited 307 people aged 30-75 years with hypertension as part of a cluster randomized controlled trial from a rural area in Bangladesh. Of the 307 participants, 135 participated less than 2.5 h of physical activity per week, from which we collected data on attitudes toward PA. Regres…

  • Understanding the sociodemographic factors associated with intention to receive SMS messages for health information in a rural area of Bangladesh

Open Access•Amirul Islam, Fakir M Amirul Islam et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

A significant proportion of people are unable to read SMS. However, people are willing to receive and pay to receive SMS for health information. Education and awareness programs should be conducted among targeted groups, including people with low education and women

  • Factors associated with antihypertensive medication use and blood pressure control in a rural area in Bangladesh

Open Access•Amirul Islam, Fakir M Amirul Islam et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Of the total participants, 144 (46.9%) were on antihypertensive medications. After multivariate adjustment, binary logistic regression revealed that employees (odds ratio, (95% confidence interval (CI)) (OR 3.58, 95%CI 1.38-9.28) compared to farmers, and people with diabetes (OR 2.43, 95%CI 1.13-5.26) compared to people without diabetes were associated with a higher proportion of antihypertensive medications use. Of 144 participants on antihypert…

  • Examining Endothelial Function and Platelet Reactivity in Patients with Depression before and after SSRI Therapy

Open Access•Tye Dawood, David A Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2016

Although it is recognized that patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) the mechanisms responsible remain unknown. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the first signs of CVD. Using two techniques, flow-mediated dilatation in response to reactive hyperemia and laser Doppler velocimetry with iontophoresis, we examined endothelial function in the forearm before and after serotonin-s…

  • Effects of Acute and Chronic Stress on the L-Arginine Nitric Oxide Pathway in Black and White South Africans

Manja Reimann, Mark Hamer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of stress on effectors of the L-arginine/nitric oxide (NO) system including the endogenous inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). METHODS: Black (n = 168) and white (n = 206) South African teachers were exposed to a mental and a physical stressor for 1 minute, respectively. Serum samples for determination of l-arginine, NO metabolites, ADMA, and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) were obtained a…

  • Psychophysiological Mechanisms in Panic Disorder

Marlies Alvarenga, Marlies E Alvarenga et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2006

Background: The risk of adverse clinical cardiac events is increased in patients with panic disorder (PD). We evaluated possible mechanistic links between PD and heart disease. We estimated cardiac vagal activity from heart rate variability (HRV) measurements and quantified sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity using plasma noradrenaline tracer kinetics methodology. Methods: Thirty-nine people with PD and 39 age- and gender-matched healthy vo…
