  • Sexual and nonsexual violence and mental health among male refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo residing in Kampala, Uganda

Wolfgang Hladik, Pamela Muniina et al.•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2023

We conducted a population-based survey in 2013 in Kampala, Uganda, to examine violence and mental health outcomes among self-settled male refugees from the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Male DRC refugees aged 18+ years were sampled through respondent-driven sampling. Key interview domains included demographics, experiences of sexual and nonsexual violence, social support, PTSD, depression and suicide ideation. Data analysis was weig…

  • Conflict-related violence and mental health among self-settled Democratic Republic of Congo female refugees in Kampala, Uganda – a respondent driven sampling survey

Open Access•Itziar Familiar, Pamela Muniina et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2021

Refugee women self-settled in Kampala reported high lifetime experiences of violence and traumatic events including rape, as well as high rates of PTSD and depression. Future programming addressing self-settled refugees and their settlement in host countries may benefit from including local and national integration strategies

  • Longitudinal Dyadic Interdependence in Depression Symptoms of Caregivers Living with HIV in Uganda and Their Dependent Children’s Neurodevelopment and Executive Behavior Outcomes

Open Access•Itziar Familiar, Atreyee Majumder et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2021

  • Association between caregiver depression symptoms and child executive functioning. Results from an observational study carried out in four sub-Saharan countries

Itziar Familiar, Miriam Chernoff et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2020

Depressive symptoms among HIV-positive (HIV+) women may negatively impact their health and possibly that of their young children through risk of compromised caregiving. We evaluated how depression symptoms in predominantly (97%) female caregivers relate to neurodevelopmental outcomes in their HIV affected children. Data come from the IMPAACT P1104s Study, an observational cohort across six sites in four countries: Zimbabwe, South Africa, Uganda a…

  • Depression Symptom Trajectories Among Mothers Living with HIV in Rural Uganda

Open Access•Itziar Familiar, Alla Sikorskii et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2019

  • Association between coping strategies, social support, and depression and anxiety symptoms among rural Ugandan women living with HIV/Aids

Victoria Seffren, Itziar Familiar et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

Poor mental health detrimentally affects quality of life among women living with HIV/AIDS. An improved understanding of how coping and social support relate to depression and anxiety in this population can facilitate the design and implementation of appropriate mental health treatment and support services. Secondary analysis was conducted on baseline data from 288 HIV-positive women enrolled in a parenting intervention in Uganda. Depression and a…

  • Caregiver mental health and HIV-infected child wellness

Sarah M Murray, Itziar Familiar et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2017

Prior studies indicate a substantial link between maternal depression and early child health but give limited consideration to the direction of this relationship or the context in which it occurs. We sought to create a contextually informed conceptual framework of this relationship through semi-structured interviews with women that had lived experience of caring for an HIV-infected child while coping with depression and anxiety symptoms. Caregive…

  • Socio-demographic correlates of depression and anxiety among female caregivers living with HIV in rural Uganda

Itziar Familiar, Sarah M Murray et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Women living with HIV are at increased risk for psychosocial distress, especially among social and economically disadvantaged women living in rural areas. Little is known about how social support and wealth impacts the mental health of women caring for young children in low- and middle-income countries. The purpose of this paper was to assess demographic, socio-economic, and social support correlates of depression and anxiety in HIV-infected+ fem…

  • Immunological correlates of behavioral problems in school-aged children living with HIV in Kayunga, Uganda

Open Access•Horacio Ruiseñor-Escudero, Itziar Familiar et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2015

Poorer behavioral outcomes were associated with higher viral loads while higher CD8 activation was associated with poorer emotional and behavioral outcomes. Complete immunological assessments for children living with HIV could include commonly used viral and immunological parameters to identify those at higher risk of having negative behavior outcomes and who would benefit the most from behavioral interventions

  • Executive function and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Ugandan children with perinatal HIV exposure

    Open Access•Matthew D Burkey, Sarah M Murray et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2015

Our results demonstrate structural validity of the ADHD measure with this population, strong associations between ADHD symptom severity and poorer executive function, and higher levels of executive function problems in perinatally HIV-exposed Ugandan children with ADHD. These findings suggest that ADHD may be an important neurocognitive disorder associated with executive function problems among children in sub-Saharan African settings where perin…

  • Exploring Psychological Distress in Burundi During and After the Armed Conflict

    Open Access•Itziar Familiar, Brian J Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Community Mental Health Journal•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 45

  • Community perceptions of mental distress in a post-conflict setting

Open Access•Itziar Familiar, Sonali Sharma et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2013

There is scant documentation of the mental health characteristics of low-income communities recovering from armed conflict. To prepare for quantitative health surveys and health service planning in Burundi, we implemented a qualitative study to explore concepts related to mental distress and coping among adults. Mental distress was defined as problems related to feelings, thinking, behaviour and physical stress. Using free listing and key informa…
