  • What can we learn from an intersectionality-informed description of study participants? Results from the German National Cohort

Open Access•Philipp Jaehn, Stefan Rach et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2025

Our results showed that heterogeneity within social categories can be revealed by applying the concept of intersectionality when comparing study participants with an external population. This way, an intersectionality-informed approach contributes to describing social complexity among study participants more precisely. Furthermore, results can be used to reduce participation barriers in a more targeted way

  • Childhood maltreatment and adult diseases in the general population

    Open Access•Johanna Klinger-König, F Streit et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Childhood maltreatment is associated with an unhealthier lifestyle in adulthood and an increased risk of mental and somatic health problems, although the underlying pathways remain unclear. This study examined whether smoking and overweight mediate the association between childhood abuse/neglect and frequent adult diseases, including cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, and anx…

  • Patterns and associated factors of accelerometer-measured physical activity in the metropolitan areas of Singapore and Berlin – comparative analysis of the Singapore population health studies and the …

Open Access•Paul Kittner, Thore Bürgel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Singaporean participants engaged more in both MVPA and LPA than those from Berlin. Factors associated with PA varied considerably between both urban populations but also in relation to PA intensities. These variations highlight the need for tailored PA promotion strategies that distinguish between reducing inactivity and increasing overall activity levels

  • Mental health of individuals with pre-existing mental illnesses at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Janine Stein, Alexander Pabst et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a range of studies on mental health, with mixed results. While numerous studies reported worsened conditions in individuals with pre-existing mental disorders, others showed resilience and stability in mental health. However, longitudinal data focusing on the German population are sparse, especially regarding effects of age and pre-existing mental disorders during the early stages of the pandemic. Object…

  • Changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior during the first Covid-19 pandemic- restrictions in Germany

Open Access•Florian Herbolsheimer, Annette Peters et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Mobility patterns shifted towards inactivity or low-intensity activities during the nationwide restrictions in the spring of 2020, potentially leading to considerable and lasting health risks

  • Predictors of Changes in Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior during the Covid-19 Pandemic in a Turkish Migrant Cohort in Germany

Open Access•Lilian Krist, Christina Dornquast et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the resulting response measures have led to severe limitations of people's exercise possibilities with diminished physical activity (PA) and increased sedentary behavior (SB). Since for migrant groups in Germany, no data is available, this study aimed to investigate factors associated with changes in PA and SB in a sample of Turkish descent. Participants of a prospective cohort study (adults of Turkish …

  • Strategies to Enhance Retention in a Cohort Study Among Adults of Turkish Descent Living in Berlin

Open Access•Christina Dornquast, Thomas Reinhold et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2021

Retention is important for statistical power and external validity in long-term cohort studies. The aims of our study were to evaluate different retention strategies within a cohort study of adults of Turkish descent in Berlin, Germany, and to compare participants and non-participants. In 2011-2012, a population-based study was conducted among adults of Turkish descent to primarily examine recruitment strategies. 6 years later, the participants w…

  • Determinants of Physical Activity and Screen Time Trajectories in 7th to 9th Grade Adolescents—A Longitudinal Study

Open Access•Lilian Krist, Stephanie Roll et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Physical activity (PA) in youth tends to decline with increasing age, while sedentary behaviour including screen time (ST) increases. There are adolescents, however, whose PA and ST do not follow this pattern. The aim of this study is (i) to examine trajectories in PA and ST from grade 7-9 among students in Berlin, and (ii) to investigate the relationship of these trajectories with individual factors and school type. For the present analyses, cha…

  • Physical Activity Trajectories among Persons of Turkish Descent Living in Germany—A Cohort Study

Open Access•Lilian Krist, Christina Dornquast et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Physical activity (PA) behavior is increasingly described as trajectories taking changes over a longer period into account. Little is known, however, about predictors of those trajectories among migrant populations. Therefore, the aim of the present cohort study was to describe changes of PA over six years and to explore migration-related and other predictors for different PA trajectories in adults of Turkish descent living in Berlin. At baseline…

  • Serum vitamin D levels in Berliners of Turkish descent –a cross-sectional study

Open Access•Lilian Krist, Theresa Keller et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Serum vitamin D levels were considerably low in Berliners of Turkish descent, and especially in veiled women. Potentially modifiable factors of low vitamin D levels were high BMI and low physical activity. These findings should be considered in the development of future public health strategies for subpopulations with Turkish migration background

  • Perceived challenges to public health in Central and Eastern Europe

    Open Access•Jacqueline Müller-Nordhorn, Christine Holmberg et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

To reduce the burden of disease across Europe, closer collaboration of countries across Europe seems important in order to learn from each other. A more credible scientific basis for effective public health interventions is urgently needed. The monitoring of health trends is crucial to evaluate the impact of public health programmes

  • Identifying the energy gap in the German population using results from representative national health surveys (1985–2002)

Open Access•Nanette Stroebele, James O Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2011

Objective The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in most countries, including Germany. The idea of estimating the population-wide energy gap that is likely responsible for the epidemic has recently been introduced and discussed. Design Using published estimates of body weight from population-based data of national health surveys (1985–2002), the energy gap was calculated by estimating the distribution of the rate of weight gain wi…
