  • The role of alcohol control policy on the level of alcohol consumption in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations 2000–2022

Open Access•Jurgen Rehm, J rgen Rehm et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: In his historical studies of current high-income countries, Angus Deaton demonstrated a correlation between a country's prosperity and the health of its population. His conceptual framework has recently been expanded to include the role of alcohol. In this ecological study, we test the key assumptions of the expanded framework and classify countries with respect to both their levels of alcohol consumption and alcohol control policies …

  • Alcohol Policies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Region—Challenges, Opportunities and Moving Forward

Open Access•Wen Ting Tong, Noran Naqiah Hairi et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2026

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region saw an increase in alcohol‐attributable deaths attributed to the rise in consumption over the past decade. Rapid economic transition underscores the importance of understanding the multifaceted impact of alcohol consumption on society and the policies designed to mitigate its harms. This commentary discusses the challenges and opportunities of alcohol policy implementation in the ASEAN reg…

  • Impact of central adiposity on the heart rate and calorie estimation accuracy of diverse smartwatches and the resulting subjective exercise experience

Open Access•Areenta Lertyongphati, Warunya Udomkhwamsuk et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Introduction In light of the growing global trend toward health awareness, wearable technologies like smartwatches have become essential for monitoring physiological indicators such as heart rate (HR). However, their utility faces two critical challenges: a technical disparity between premium and affordable devices and a conceptual gap where objective HR may fail to capture the true subjective strain experienced by diverse populations. Consequent…

  • Impact of alcohol excise taxation and structural reforms on per capita consumption in Thailand, 1995–2021

Open Access•Nyi Nyi Zayar, Polathep Vichitkunakorn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

Alcohol excise taxation (i.e., excise tax increases and structural reforms) significantly reduced APC in Thailand. Future taxation policies should include automatic adjustments for changes in inflation and/or disposable household income to sustain their long-term public health impact

  • Prevalence of non-communicable disease risk factors and their association with economic status

Open Access•Polathep Vichitkunakorn, Warintorn Bunyanukul et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2025

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are major contributors to mortality and disease burden; however, evidence regarding NCD risk factors, particularly socioeconomic factors, remains limited. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence of five key behavioural risk factors for NCDs (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and overweight/obesity) within the Thai population and the influence of economic status on th…

  • Association between caring for drinkers and the sociodemographic factors of caregivers in Thailand

Open Access•Athip Tanaree, Orratai Waleewong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The study showed that the burden of caring for drinkers was more likely found in males and was positively associated with more drinking. Thus, a policy approach that reduces consumption would reduce the impact on the prevalence of caring for others

  • Estimated cost of extra work hours from co‐workers' drinking in Thailand

Open Access•Udomsak Saengow, Surasak Chaiyasong et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2024

  • Inequalities in access to new medication delivery services among non-communicable disease patients during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Jiraluck Nontarak, Polathep Vichitkunakorn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2023

This study highlighted a disproportionate concentration of access to new NCD MDSs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand, which was more concentrated in lower-income groups. The government should further study and integrate MDSs with the highest cost benefits into nationwide regular systems, while addressing systematic barriers to access to these services, such as the lack of shared health data across health facilities and tele pharmacy equipme…

  • Muslim parents’ beliefs and factors influencing complete immunization of children aged 0–5 years in a Thai rural community

Open Access•Taqwa Jinarong, Rattanaporn Chootong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Both positive and negative factors influencing complete immunization were found in this study. To enhance vaccine acceptance, health care providers should understand Muslim cultural beliefs by offering parents a chance to express their attitudes and encourage vaccination via religious leaders and community role models

  • Alcohol Recognition and Desire to Drink of Extended Alcohol Brand Logos

Open Access•Polathep Vichitkunakorn, Sawitri Assanangkornchai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Alcohol companies in Thailand have adopted surrogate marketing that uses similar logos on non-alcoholic products. We aimed to assess variations of the alcohol recognition using reaction time and desire to drink among consumers exposed to original logos and modified logos (i.e., black logos, partial logos, logos on non-alcoholic beverages and other merchandise). Participants aged ≥19 years took part in this cross-sectional study. The primary indep…

  • The Association among Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Drink-Driving Behaviors, and the Harm from Alcohol-Related Road Traffic Injuries Due to the Drinking of Others in Thailand

Open Access•Sopit Nasueb, Jintana Jankhotkaew et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Thailand has one of the highest rates of traffic-related fatalities and alcohol-related road traffic injuries globally. Previous studies focused on alcohol consumption and road traffic injuries. However, no existing studies investigate the association between drink-driving behaviors and road traffic injuries due to the drinking of others. This study aims to explore any potential associations among alcohol drinking patterns, drink-driving behavior…

  • Changes in preventive behaviour after Covid-19 vaccination in Thailand

Open Access•Pitchayanont Ngamchaliew, Narathip Kaewkuea et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

This evidence revealed that Thai people maintain their protective behaviours after vaccination but rather improved them. Moreover, demographic data were significantly associated with improved protective behaviours, but various vaccine regimens were not. These findings might be useful for implementing policies to maintain personal protective behaviours after vaccination against COVID-19

  • Association of supply sources of alcohol and alcohol-related harms in adolescent drinkers

Open Access•Jirada Prasartpornsirichoke, Rasmon Kalayasiri et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The results did not support parental guidance in teaching or giving children a drink or sip of alcohol within family to prevent related harms when drinking outside with their peers

  • Investigation of tobacco and alcohol co‐consumption in Thailand

Open Access•Nopphol Witvorapong, Polathep Vichitkunakorn•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2021

  • Effectiveness of Innovation Media for Improving Physical Distancing Compliance during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Hattaya Chutiphimon, Apinya Thipsunate et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

To flatten the curve of COVID-19 infections, with no effective pharmacological interventions or vaccine available in the imminent future, public health responses must continue to rely on non-pharmacological interventions. We developed three innovation media to promote physical distancing compliance (i.e., a fearful picture, a red one-way arrow sign, and a norm-speech sticker). This study aimed to compare physical distancing compliance between our…
