  • La Alhambra, un palacio islámico

    Open Access•Cynthia Robinson•ARTICLE•Anales de Historia del Arte•2014

This article employs a variety of texts in order to propose a new reading of the Lady of the so-called “Hall of Justice” paintings which links her to a project of Nasrid dynastic self-representation involving, in addition to the Lady herself, trees, vegetation, gardens and evocations of the family of the Prophet Muhammad. It is proposed that the symbolic significance accorded to the Lady by the Nasrids is related to the importance of the Virgin a…

    Cynthia Robinson•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2011•Cited by: 1

This chapter employee's strategies of contextualization and interdisciplinary interpretation similar to those the author adopted in two recent publications concerned with the Mudejar phenomenon. Outside the context of discussions of methodology, to which the following two sections are devoted, Mudejar will be rejected as a useful designator of either a coherent group of monuments or a definable Islamicizing aesthetic. Topoi such as the towers, di…

  • Arthur in the Alhambra? Narrative and Nasrid Courtly Self-Fashioning in The Hall Of Justice Ceiling Paintings

    Cynthia Robinson•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2008•Cited by: 3

This essay reconsiders the "Arthurian" identification of a number of the scenes that compose the ornamental program of the painted ceilings above the northern and southern alcobas of the Alhambra's Hall of Justice, proposing a reading that privileges Castilian versions of well-known courtly romances over French ones. The scenes are read as representations of the stories of Flores y Blancaflor, as well as Tristán de Leonís. Both tales, however, ha…

  • Trees of Love, Trees of Knowledge

    Cynthia Robinson•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2006•Cited by: 5

This essay seeks to define and explore the significance of trees as a cross-cultural devotional topos in late medieval Iberian spirituality. Through an examination of both visual and literary material from Christian, Islamic, and Jewish contexts, much of which is published here for the first time, trees are demonstrated to be at the center of both polemics and devotions, often—in a Christian context—serving as a stand-in for the crucified body of…

  • Ubi Sunt

    Cynthia Robinson•ARTICLE•Muqarnas Online•1998

I have only cruel absence to ask, for he has dispersed them, [I know not] if to the mountains or to the plain. Time has worked its tyranny on them, and they were dispersed to all ends of the earth; most of them have died. Destiny has invaded their dwellings: they have changed, and their former inhabitants are not what they were. Time has refused to [again] create light in its courtyards, which [before] almost set hearts ablaze. For such as Cordob…
