  • How to spend the newly dedicated public transportation funding

Melody Huslage, Courtney Cronley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2024

The current study explores perceived difficulty accessing transportation among persons experiencing homelessness in two communities, one with and one without a public bus system. Researchers administered a survey (N = 164) containing nine items measured on a 5-point Likert scale; higher scores indicated greater difficulty with transportation access. The scale, with the omission of one item, was found to demonstrate adequate validity and reliabili…

Identifying and implementing effective strategies to combat social exclusion and isolation is critical, given that eradicating social isolation has been identified as one of the social work profession’s main goals. Training older adults to use information and communications technology (ICT) effectively may be an appropriate intervention to combat and mitigate the negative impacts of social isolation within the aging population. ICT has demonstrat…

  • Homelessness From a Holistic Paradigm

Courtney Cronley, Erin Roark Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Education•2020

In the following article we argue that social work education and research ought to approach homelessness from a holistic paradigm emphasizing individual resilience and autonomy. The current lack of explicit curriculum in many schools of social work necessitates creative strategies to integrate homeless content into social work education. We offer 3 diverse pedagogical strategies: course-based service learning, program evaluation, and graduate res…

Open Access•Erin Roark Murphy, Brittany H Eghaneyan•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 24

Research demonstrates that homelessness among older adults will significantly increase in the coming decades due to population ageing, a trend of first-time homelessness at mid-life and continued economic vulnerability into old age without appropriate prevention and policy response. The objective of this study was to generate a rich description of homelessness as told by older adults using a qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis (QIMS). This ap…

  • Creating safe spaces

James C Petrovich, Erin Roark Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2017

Day shelter programs are an important resource for people experiencing homelessness, offering respite from inclement weather, social stigma, victimization, and access to essential services and resources. Creating functional day shelter spaces requires that staff, services, and facilities support the needs of this vulnerable and marginalized population. Little guidance, however, is available regarding the design of day shelter spaces that support …
